Traunik – A benefit chili dinner and dance for Damien Miron will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 4:30 to 11 p.m. at the Traunik Slovenian Club.

Admission is $5 for the dinner only, $8 for dinner and dance. Included will be door prizes, a silent auction and a raffle.

Damien, infant son of Alexis Pierce and Michael Miron, is a patient at Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, awaiting three heart surgeries. Proceeds will assist his family with related expenses.

K.I. Sawyer – ‘W’alk the Doors Open, a walk to raise money to reopen the “W” at Sawyer, will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at The “W” at Sawyer.

There is a $10 participation fee. Walkers can increase their donation by collecting pledges in support their participation.

Prizes will be awarded for the most money collected and the most laps walked.

My Brother Nikhil Film Showing Nov.4

Marquette – Documentary filmmaker Dhar Anirban Onir will screen his 2005 film, “My Brother Nikhil,” on Wednesday, November 4 at 5 p.m. in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building at Northern Michigan University.

Following the film Onir will lead a discussion about being a socially engaged filmmaker in Bollywood.

“My Brother Nikhil” is 1989 story of Dominic Souza, who was diagnosed with one of India's first cases of HIV and was arrested and quarantined for his condition.… Read the rest

African American Pioneers Presentation Nov. 4

Marquette – Author Valerie Bradley-Holliday will speak on African-descended pioneers in the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Bradley-Holliday is the author of “Northern Roots,” a history of African American settlers and how they survived by working in lumber, mining, hunting, fishing, education and sports.

Bradley-Holliday will discuss her continuing research, focusing on the positive impact African Americans have made in the Upper Peninsula. She will sign books after the presentation.
