Marquette – AARP volunteer Kathy Lakanen and a team of trained assistants will offer assistance with state and federal income taxes to senior citizens age 60 and older on Wednesday, February 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Marquette Senior Center, 300 W. Spring Street in Marquette.

Items needed at the appointment include: Social Security card; 1099R forms, retirement or annuity; W-2 Forms (work); Unemployment Compensation Statement; SSA-1099, Social Security or Railroad Retirement statement; statements of miscellaneous income; all 1099 forms; statements of interest paid; dividends; stocks information; all forms showing federal income tax withheld (only if itemizing); all receipts or canceled checks; bank information for refund; heating bills; rent payment information; real estate taxes; amount of last year’s rebate; copy of 2008 income taxes.

Marquette – The city of Marquette Parks and Recreation Department and the Marquette Downtown Development Authority will offer a series of free ice skating programs on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marquette Commons ice rink at 112 S. Third Street in downtown Marquette..

Wednesday, February 3 is Couples Date and Skate Night, featuring a live concert by The Derrell Syria Project in the commons building.

Skaters will receive coupons from Aubree’s Pizzeria and Tavern and complimentary Donckers Dollars. Babycakes Muffin Company will sell hot cocoa and baked goods.

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will travel to see the Tony Award-nominated musical comedy “The Wedding Singer on Wednesday, February 17 at the Rozsa Center in Houghton.

Departures will be at 3 p.m. at the Westwood Mall in Marquette; 3:15 p.m. at the Border Grill in Negaunee; and 3:30 p.m. at Jubilee Foods in Ishpeming. The group will return between midnight and 12:30 a.m.

Dinner will be at participants’ expense at 5:30 p.m. at the Pilgrim River Steakhouse in Houghton.

KC Zampese and Erycka Oglesby presented the information about a special fund raising musical concert coming this weekend to Negaunee to help the kids in the Negaunee Symphonic Band raise the money needed for their planned trip to New York City this spring. They are presenting a Night of Music on Sunday, January 31 at 6:30 p.m. in the Negaunee High School auditorium. Admission of $5 includes dessert after the concert. There also will be a silent auction.

Marquette – The Northern Michigan University Golden Z Club will sponsor a presentation by Dr. Michael Conley on Monday, February 1 at 7 p.m. in the Charcoal Room of the NMU University Center.

Conley, a board certified gynecologist, will discuss his volunteer work in Africa, where he performs surgery to correct obstetric fistulas in African women, a condition which affects more than 2 million women.

Hancock – A beginning 10-string kantele class, instructed by Kay Seppala, will be held on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., beginning on February 1 at the Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock.

Cost for the class is $40, which includes the use of an instrument and all materials. The class will meet for eight weeks, depending on the schedules of the class members.

Fire at Marquette Business – 1/27/10

Marquette City Firefighters responded to a reported fire at a Marquette business on Wednesday afternoon.  Firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the Big Lots store, connected to the Marquette Mall in Marquette shortly after 12:30 PM.  The fire department responded with two trucks and several firefighters arriving on the scene.  An inspection of the facility found the smoke to be coming from the heating and cooling system located on the roof of the store.  No word has been released on the actual cause of the smoke, but the store was evacuated as firefighters investigated the scene.  The investigation is continuing and further details are expected later.

Katy Martin, youth representative from the Marquette County Community Foundation Board of Directors, and Nikki DeWald, Race Co-ordinator with the Noquemanon Ski Race visited us this morning to talk about the Youth Noque Race being held this Friday in Marquette County and how youth volunteers from the MCCF are helping with the event. Katy also discussed her involvement with the Foundation from a youth standpoint and how other interested youth can get involved. Nikki also gave us an overview of the youth race and the entire weekend’s events.

Ishpeming – The Friends of the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library will hold a used books bag sale on Saturday, January 30 and Monday through Friday, February 1 through 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Books will sell for $3 a bag on Saturday and for $2 a bag all other days.

The monthly used book sales will begin on Saturday, March 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. The Friends use all proceeds from these sales for the benefit of the library, purchasing supplies, books, furniture, and other items suggested by the librarians and library director.

Diabetes Outreach Network and its health partners will offer a Personal Action Towards Health workshop for people who live with or or have a loved one who lives with a chronic health condition such as diabetes, arthritis, asthma, chronic pain, fibromylagia, heart disease, migraines, obesity or others.

The six week workshop will be held on Fridays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. January 30 through March 5, in the lower level conference room of the Peninsula Medical Center.
