YMCA Middle School Dance April 12

The YMCA of Marquette County is hosting a middle school dance on Saturday, April 12 from 8 to 11 p.m. for all area youth in sixth through eighth grade.

A registration form must be completed by a parent/guardian for the youth to attend. Tickets are $3.50 for YMCA members and $5.50 for non-members. For more information, call 227-9622.

Spaghetti Benefit Dinner and Sock Hop April 5

Enjoy an awesome dinner and kick up your heels for a great cause on Saturday, April 5 at the Crossroads Bar and Grill. Dinner will be from 4 to 6 p.m. and dancing to golden oldies, provided by U.P. Mobile Sound, will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

There will be prize drawings and a silent auction throughout the night. Here's your chance to compete in a dance contest, enjoy root beer floats, and maybe get some more mileage out of that poodle skirt or leather jacket. Bring the whole family.

All proceeds will go to medical expenses for Jason Lehigh, who is battling diabetes, pancreatitis and kidney failure. He has no medical insurance. Please help a fellow Yooper and his family!

EVENT CANCELLED – WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR LATER DATE

Dr. Drew Pinsky, better known to radio and television audiences as “Dr. Drew,” will speak on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the Vandament Arena at NMU. Tickets are $1 for NMU students, $3 for the general public, and are available at all NMU EZ Ticket outlets. As host of the nationally syndicated radio call-in show, “Loveline, ” Dr. Drew dispenses advice on relationships, sexuality, and drug addiction problems. He also appears on VH1's “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” He also hosted “Strictly Sex with Dr. Drew” on the Discovery Channel and had a one hour special, “Lance Armstrong Stories of Survival.” Dr. Drew is also the author of two books.

Spring Clothing Re-Sale April 12

NICE schools are offering a Spring Clothing Re-Sale on Saturday, April 12 at Aspen Ridge Elementary School in Ishpeming. All items will be 25 cents. Proceeds will benefit the NICE Families program.

Drop off clean, folded clothing in the Aspen Ridge lobby from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Shop from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Preschool Screening May 1-2

Negaunee Public Schools and AMCAB Head Start are conducting free preschool developmental screening Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2. Screening will take place at Lakeview Elementary School new Preschool Center, Birch St. Entrance near gym.

Parents/Guardians of children who will be 3 or 4 on/by December 1, 2008 can apply and make screening appointments by calling the Head Start Office at 228-6522.

Little Folks Cooperative Preschool Open House May 7

Little Folks Cooperative Preschool in Skandia is now accepting early registration for Fall 2008-2009 preschool classes. Students must be 3 by September 5, 2008 to enroll.

There will be an Open House on Wednesday, May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Stay for the whole day or just stay awhile. Information packets and enrollments packets will be available. Sign up early and waive the registration fee!

School of the Americas Exposed April 1

Father Roy Bourgeois, founder of the School of the Americas Watch, will speak on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

The School of the Americas is at Fort Benning, Georgia and has gained notoriety for training hundreds of soldiers from Latin America in combat skills every year, all at the U.S. taxpayers expense.
