Marquette – The Peter White Public Library will present a screening of “Waking Ned Devine” on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.

The film is set in the close-knit, traditional Irish village of Tullymore, a where everyone knows everyone else’s business. One of the 49 villagers has struck it rich, winning several million in the National Lottery’s Lotto game, yet it remains a mystery who might have won.

Iron River – The Carrie Jacobs-Bond Composing Threaders will sponsor a National Quilt Day open house on Tuesday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. CDT at Grace Covenant Church, 316 Jasper Street in Iron River.

Fabric cutting, piecing by paper, hand and machine sewing and quilting, embroidering and binding will be demonstrated. Children’s quilts, quilts of valor for wounded veterans, and quilts and hats for dialysis and cancer patients, as well as quilts for use at the local kennel will be displayed.

A free lunch will be served. “Sunset Serenade,” a quilt made by the group, will be raffled off at the event.

Marquette – The Marquette County Conservation District will host a free tree planting workshop on Tuesday, March 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the district’s office at 780 Commerce Drive, Suite B, in Marquette Township.

Natural Resources Conservation Service and conservation district staff will answer questions on tree planting for windbreaks, reforestation and attracting wildlife.

Also, orders are being taken for this year’s tree sale; catalogs are available at the district office, Lakeview Arena, the Marquette Food Co-op, Peter White Public Library, the Michigan DNRE office, Lake Superior Community Partnership, the Marquette Board of Light and Power and the YMCA.

Marquette – The 50-voice concert choir of St. Paul Lutheran High School in Concordia, Missouri, under the direction of William L. Gasau, will present a concert of sacred music on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1700 W. Fair Avenue, Marquette.

The concert of traditional and contemporary hymns will begin with a processional hymn with the choir, congregation and instruments. Featured will be the music of Pachelbel, Handel, Hammerschmidt, Christiansen and Rutter.

Admission is free, however a free-will offering will be received.

Marquette – The exploration of the planet Saturn by the Cassini spacecraft is the subject of a slide presentation on Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

Scott Stobbelaar, NASA Solar System ambassador, will explain the findings of the space mission. Stobbelaar, retired planetarium director and NMU astronomy professor, will show newly released images from last November’s flyby over Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus.

This presentation is an International Year of Astronomy event, a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, marking the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei.

Admission is free, but donations to benefit the library will be accepted.

Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Public Relations Student Society of America and Marquette Mountain will hold the Third Annual Ski and Snowboard Competition “Jam 4 Love,” a charity ski and snowboard rail jam on Sunday March 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marquette Mountain.

There will be three divisions for all ages and experience levels. Advanced registration forms can be picked up at Northern Michigan Universitys University Center room 1205. There will also be registration the day of at Marquette Mountain. Registration is $10 for Marquette Mountain season pass holders and $15 for non-season pass holders. Crystal Falls – One man dancing band Colin O’Brien will perform at the Second Sunday Folk Dance series Sunday, March 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. CST at Fortune Lake Camp, two miles west of Crystal Falls on U.S. 2.

White Water will open the event with a short concert, followed by the featured concert with O’Brien. After the concert The Front Parlor Dance Band will provide dance music with dance instruction.

Admission is $7 for adults, free for 14 and younger. That same day fiddler Bob Arthur will lead an old-time music jam session at 1 p.m. at the Emanuel Village at Fortune Lake Camp.

Marquette – The 18th annual “Learning to Walk Together” traditional powwow will be held on Saturday, March 13 beginning at 11 a.m. at Northern Michigan University’s Vandament Arena.

Grand entries will be at noon and 6 p.m. They will feature a veterans’ honor song, male and female traditional dances, jingle dress and grass dance exhibitions, and fancy bustle and fancy shawl dance exhibitions.

Audience members are invited to participate in social dances such as the two-step and round dance. Various vendors and artisans will also have items for sale. A traditional feast for those who attend the powwow and receive a hand stamp will be held at 4 p.m.

Admission is $3 for the general public and is free for NMU students with a student ID.
