January Exhibits: Rachel May And Poet Laureate Of The Upper Peninsula Andrea Scarpino

MARQUETTE, MI – The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center announces its January LSAA Gallery exhibition by East Coast author and fiber artist, Rachel May. Her exhibit will feature pieces from her book The Experiments: A Legend in Pictures & Words that integrate her writing and fiber art. May is also the author of Quilting with a Modern Slant, and the forthcoming novel, The Benedictines.

The January SmallWorks Gallery will feature a multi-modal collaboration between Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula, Andrea Scarpino, and visual artists Emily Lanctot, Christine Hinz Lenzen, and Carol Phillips. Their exhibit, Repeated : Again explores memory as subject and object, as foundational to human experience, and as continually changing. Scarpino is the author of many poetry collections, including her most recent project What the Willow Said as it Fell (forthcoming in March 2016). Lanctot is the curator of collections and outreach at the DeVos Art Museum, and an Assistant Professor at Northern Michigan University’s School of Art and Design. Lenzen is also an Assistant Professor at NMU, focusing on Photography. Phillips is the curator of visual art for the Lake Superior Art Association, serves as the Director of Liberty Children’s Art Project, and teaches art at Powell Township School in Big Bay, MI.

The LSAA Gallery exhibit will be up from Jan. 7 to Jan. 29 and the SmallWorks exhibit will run from Jan. 4 to Jan. 29. There will be a combined artist reception to include readings by May and Scarpino on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be provided.

The City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center is located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library. For more information or questions, please contact (906) 228-0472 or email arts-culture@mqtcty.org.
