Northern Michigan University will mark Women’s History Month with the following events. All are free and open to the public.
Tuesday, March 10: Michael Kaufman presents “The Gender Equality Advantage” at 7 p.m. in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. He is an educator and writer focused on engaging men and boys to promote gender equality and end violence against women.
Wednesday, March 11: Artist Kyla Strid will explore her progression from undergraduate engineering student to professional artist working on archaeological sites in Crete at 6:30 p.m. in room 165 in the Art and Design Building. She will also be in the building’s ceramics studio from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 12.
Saturday, March 14: Elect Her, a free half-day workshop that encourages and trains college women to run for student government and future political office, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in the Explorer Rooms of the University Center. Advance registration is requested at www.nmu.edu/skillbuilders.
Monday, March 16: Artist Libby Rowe will present her work “Pink,” bringing together anatomy lessons with intentionally charged imagery and text to produce a new forum of discussion on what it is to be a woman—physically, socially and psychologically. Her work encourages reconstruction of accepted social definitions of feminine, womanhood and equality while questioning who is and should be in control of those definitions. This event is at 7 p.m. in room 165 of the Art and Design Building.
Monday, March 23: Women, Leadership, Inquiry, Action (WLIA) seeks to empower women to successfully pursue advanced degrees and foster a spirit of mentoring amongst professional women. NMU faculty members will discuss their recent experiences juggling graduate school and life at 5 p.m. in 1322 Jamrich Hall.
Monday, March 30: Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, will lead a storytelling session with other featured storytellers from 6-8 p.m. in the Whitman Hall commons.
Tuesday, March 31: Kimmerer will present a keynote address, “The Honorable Harvest: Indigenous Knowledge and Conservation,” at 7 p.m. in 1100 Jamrich Hall.
