MARQUETTE, MI – The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will hold a conversation about “
The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert , on Thursday, March 12, at 7pm in the Conference Room at Peter White Public Library in Marquette.
Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Kolbert traces possible scientific reasons for each of the periods, along with several animals that became extinct for one reason or another. She also traces the idea of extinction which we have just developed over the last 200 years. Scientists are documenting an extinction rate today that rivals the time when the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. This time, Kolbert suggests, we humans are the cause.
Anyone is welcome to join the conversation. It would help to have at least started to read one of the books. For more information call 226-3314 or email mqtchaz@gmail.com.
