Upper Great Lakes Talent Summit Update

Talent Summit 2013

Thank you for your continued support of the talent development system in the Upper Peninsula. Here is an update from the planning team that is working on improvement strategies identified at the Talent Summit.

Members of the planning team include: Mike Koster, Superintendent of Delta Schoolcraft Intermediate School District; Gwen Worley, Director of Eastern UP Michigan Works; Brian Sarvello, CTE Director at Marquette Alger Regional Service Agency; Deb Veiht, Superintendent of Marquette Alger Regional Service Agency; Mark Massicotte, President of L’Anse Manufacturing; Tony Retaskie, UP Construction Council; Dave Goudreau, Owner of Northern Wings Repair; Holly Peoples, Deb Doyle and Robert Micheau from Michigan Works! The Job Force; Derek Bush from Lake Superior Community Partnership; Penny Parmet with North Central Schools and Adult Education; Laurie Kaufman with Bankers life and Casualty; Annette Johnson, Career Counselor and Liaison with Bay College; Dan Reattoir, Superintendent of Eastern UP Intermediate School District; Tammy Rutledge, CTE Director from Eastern UP Intermediate School District and Dana Sitzler from the University of Michigan office of Government Relations.

The planning team is developing an asset map of all career exploration, preparation and guidance activities throughout the over 90 school buildings in our region. This will be an important tool in helping to strengthen our talent pipeline. The 7 ISD Career and Technical Education Directors have taken the lead on this project and will produce a draft of this item by mid-January.

The outcomes from this document will be first and foremost to identify successful practices and celebrate them. Many fantastic efforts are happening in our school districts and this will help to raise awareness about these activities in our region. The best practices that are identified here will be shared throughout districts for potential replication.

The second priority will be identifying areas that may have gaps in career related efforts. Identifying areas of need will help with finding resources that may be able to assist. Finally, based on the data, there will be region-wide improvement strategies to cultivate and implement in the region.

The date for the 2014 Talent Summit has been set for October 30th at NMU. Please mark your calendar.

Again, we thank you for your support and will be sending you periodic updates as we move ahead with action items in our region. Please contact Holly Peoples with any questions at hpeoples@jobforce.org or 906-280-2441.
