High School Group Seeks Support for Suicide Prevention Training

Message from Kim Carr
Kim Carr is collaborating with the high school guidance department to bring suicide prevention training to our district as well as Negaunee, Ishpeming, NICE, North Star and Gwinn Schools.

Our school is committed to provide an ongoing preventative program to school staff and teachers to help prevent the tragedies that recently hit our Marquette County communities. In order to provide a well-researched quality program and ongoing support to our schools we need some financial assistance.

Our goal is to schedule QPR-suicide prevention training on November 28 this year for select staff and guidance counselors in our schools.  This training will provide us with the tools to train others within our school and community.  The 15 teachers and counselors that will receive training within our district will train teachers and students within our organization.

Here is a breakdown of our expenses to bring our nationally renowned trainer, Mary VanHaute to Marquette.

Training Costs ($395 x 15 participants) $5,925
Airfaire $1,000
Hotel $180
Food Expenses for Training $100
Lunch for group on day of Training $120
Substitute Teacher Costs $520
Totals $7,845

We need to secure these funds in a short time frame. If you could contact us via email or phone as soon as possible and let us know how much you can contribute through grants or other means.  We need our school board’s approval for this training and need to report our progress on fundraising commitments by Friday, October 19.  Contributions after this date will also help in our efforts to purchase QPR’s online training program which will continue to educate staff in the event of employee turnover.  The online training will also be utilized for student training sessions.

We plan to recognize each of our sponsors in the Mining Journal as a thank you for helping to strengthen our staff, students and community.
