Flags Lowered for Identified MIA Korean War Soldier August 13, 2021

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff  throughout the state of Michigan on Friday, August 13 to honor the service of Korean War veteran Army Sgt. Jesse “Johnnie” D. Hill. Army Sgt. Hill, which coincides with the day of his funeral.

“Sergeant Hill served our country with honor and dignity,” Whitmer said. “After so many years of uncertainty, the return of Sergeant Hill’s remains will help to provide some closure to his family. I have lowered the flags to honor his life, and serve as our state’s appreciation to finally have him home.”

Army Sgt. Jesse “Johnnie” D. Hill, a Highland Park native, was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division during the Korean War.

In 1950, his unit was attacked near the Chosin Reservoir. After the attack, Sgt. Hill was listed as missing in action at the age of 20 years old. His remains were found and identified nearly 70 years after he was killed in the attack.

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and selfless service of Army Sgt. Jesse “Johnnie” D. Hill by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should be returned to full-staff on Saturday, August 14, 2021 unless otherwise notified.
