Marquette – A Watercolor Workshop with Mary Ann Beckwith, “Superior Silhouettes” will be offered Tuesday, July 25 through Thursday, July 27 from 10 a.m. ti 4 p.m. each day at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

This watercolor workshop will assist you in interpreting landscapes in a new fresh way, focusing on edges, patterns of lights and darks, and expressing the vision of those shapes.

Marquette – Patty Birkholz, newly appointed director of the State of Michigan Office of the Great Lakes, will give a presentation titled “Our Great Lakes” on Monday, April 18 at 3 p.m. in the Mead Auditorium of the West Science Building at Northern Michigan University.

Birkholz will speak on topics currently impacting the Great Lakes, such as Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species, water diversion, algae problems, mining concerns, water levels, health of the lakes and Indian fishing rights.

Calendar – Community – Commercial Tomato Greenhouse Project – Apr. 10

Marquette – The community is invited to hear about the exciting Upper Peninsula organic tomato production project on Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette.

John A. Hust, CEO of Shelter Bay Tomatoes will detail his plans for a large scale modern production greenhouse to provide locally grown, organic tomatoes for the fresh market to Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin retailers and restaurants. The goal of the project is to put one and one half acres under glass to produce 25 pounds of tomatoes per square foot. Plans for other vegetable crops are in the works as well. The production will be all organic and the greenhouse will be heated with wood chips and eventually wind power.

Marquette – Xi Sigma, the local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing encourages all past and present members to attend the Annual Spring Meeting on Saturday, April 9 from 9:15 a.m. to noon in the Huron and Erie Rooms at NMU’s University Center.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Karen Morin, 2009-2011 president of Sigma Theta Tau International. This is an oppportunity to connect with other professionals within the field of nursing.

L’Anse – The L’Anse High School Drama Club will present “Sherlock’s First Adventure” Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 10 at 5 p.m. at the L’Anse High School Cafetorium.

Calumet – An all-school musical production of “Annie” will be offered Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 2 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre in Calumet.

Over 50 middle and high school students from across the Copper Country combine their talents to put on a Tony award winning musical. Annie is the Broadway musical based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip.

Marquette – A Watercolor Workshop with Gordon MacKenzie will be offered Thursday, April 7 through Saturday, April 9 at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

Adding dynamics and atmospherics to your paintings will dramatically improve the results. This will be the focus of the workshop, using a variety of painting and compositional techniques.
