Marquette – The Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity Conference will present NMU’s visiting scholar from China, Jian Sha, speaking about the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province on Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at the DeVos Art Museum.

The museum will display several pieces of art by surviving children and host a reception following Sha’s talk.

The event is free of charge.

Marquette – The Marquette Choral Society will begin rehearsals for its Christmas concert on Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in Choral Room 250 of the Thomas Fine Arts building at Northern Michigan University.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 4 and 3 p.m. Sunday, December 5 at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

The repertoire includes “Midnight Mass for Christmas” by Charpentier and several new carols by John Rutter. The choral society is under the direction of Floyd Slotterback. All who enjoy singing are welcome; no audition is necessary. There is a nominal fee for music and membership.

Marquette – The Northern Michigan University music department will present a violin concert on Sunday, September 12 at 3 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall.

The concert will begin with three traditional violin pieces, played by Barbara Rhyneer and accompanied by Nancy Redfern on piano. These pieces will include “Sonata No. 3″ by Handel, “Concerto in G, K. 216″ by Mozart and “Csardas” by Vittorio Monti. The last piece, a jazz number titled “Blue Monk” by Thelonious Monk, will feature violin, trumpet, drum and bass.

Rock – The Rock Community Center will host a dance on Sunday, September 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. at 3892 W. Maple Ridge Road in Rock.

Featured will be live music by Little Bit of Outlaw. Admission is $5, with lunch available by free-will donation. All proceeds will benefit the Rock Senior Corp. For more information, call 356-6588.

Trenary – St. Rita Parish in Trenary will sponsor its annual fall festival Sunday, September 12 on the parish grounds.

Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. A harvest turkey dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parish hall. Tickets cost $8 for adults, $4 for children, and takeout will be available.

There will be games for children and adults, including the silver dollar game and bingo. Crafts and baked goods will be available for purchase. Live music will be provided by Maudie. There will be a raffle drawing at 4 p.m.

A work bee will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday to prepare the grounds and hall. Volunteers are needed for the bee and for food preparation.

Marquette – Auditions for the Marquette Senior High School Fine Arts Department’s annual broadway musical production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” will be held on Sunday, September 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Room 102 at Marquette Senior High School.

Students, parents and teachers are encouraged to audition. A large cast is required. Performances of “Into the Woods” will be November 18-20 at 7 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium.

L’Anse – A farmer’s market will be offered on Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the L’Anse Waterfront Park in downtown L’Anse.

The market will offer seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbs, shrubs and flowering plants, farm fresh eggs, bakery, crafts and flea market items.

Marquette – Special events related to an exhibit of works by Alger County resident Niel Haapala will be held Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 at Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum.

The exhibit, “Niel Haapala: An Illustrated History of Louds Spur and Other Small Histories from Alger County,” features paintings and wood carvings the artist made to share stories, jokes and local history.

A reception will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the DeVos Art Museum.

At noon on Saturday, Stuart Baird of Calumet will give a woodcarving demonstration, and from 1 to 3 p.m. the museum will host an open house reception and family day, with art activities for children of all ages.

The exhibition and related programs are presented in conjunction with the Upper Peninsula Folklife Festival, presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU.

Haapala spent much of his working days in the logging camps, where he learned to carve wood and paint from a German prisoner of war. But it wasn’t until he retired that he found his artistic calling. Haapala’s work will be on display through September 26.

Marquette – The second annual U.P. Beer Fest will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Mattson Lower Harbor Park in Marquette.

Over 30 Michigan craft brewers will be on hand offering tasting opportunities. Tickets may be purchased at The Vierling. You must be 21 with a valid ID to enter the grounds.

Marquette – A Fair Trade Market will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sunday, September 12 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street in Marquette.

Featured items will include handcrafted jewelry, purses, scarves, bags, wood products, and general gift ideas. All items are handmade by disadvantaged artisans in developing regions around the world.

Fair Trade soup mixes, coffee, tea and a variety of chocolate items will also be available.

Each purchase helps artisans and growers maintain steady work and earn a sustainable income so they can provide for their families. A portion of each sale is also used to support educational and social services in their communities.

Harvey – St. Louis the King Church in Harvey will have a fundraiser St. Louis Style BBQ Chicken and Ribs Dinner on Saturday, September 11 from 2:30 to 7 p.m. in Gauthier Hall.

The theme of the event is patriotic, remembering all war vets, police and firefighters.
The buffet dinner will include Ed’s Croatian Chicken and Gary’s Country-Style Ribs. There will also be a DJ spinning tunes. World Youth Day Pilgrims will be selling pop and homemade desserts for their Spain trip. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase. Meals will be available for take-out and whole chickens will also be for sale.

Dinners are $10 for most orders, $8 for 1/4 chicken, and $5 for 1/4 chicken for children 10 and under.

Negaunee – Mitchell United Methodist Church in Negaunee will host a community Fall Back Festival on Saturday, September 11 from noon to 3 p.m. in the church parking lot.

Free hot dogs, chips, popcorn and pop will be available. There will be face painting for children, a carnival jump house and live music.

Houghton – A Kiwanis Chicken Barbecue will be held on Saturday, September 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dee Stadium in Houghton.

The meal will include a 1/2 chicken, baked potato, roll, beverage and ice cream. Eat in or take out. All proceeds benefit the youth activities fund.

Marquette – Wild Birds Unlimited will host “American Birdlife,” a digitally projected visual presentation by wildlife photographer David Jesse McChesney, on Saturday, September 11 at noon and 2 p.m. at 2168 U.S. 41 W., Marquette.

McChesney will also sign copies of his book, “Muir Roots: At One with the Wild.” There will be prize drawings and refreshments.
