Queen City Seed Swap

Marquette, MI – A Celebration of Seeds event, sponsored by the Queen City Seed Library, will be held in the lower level of the Peter White Library on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, to highlight the importance of seeds in our local food system.

The 2-day event begins with a kids activity and seed-themed scavenger hunt beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Saturday activities include a gardening workshop at 10:30 a.m., followed by the 5th annual Community Seed Swap. Participants who bring seeds should arrive at 1 p.m., prepared with open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds that are labeled with the plant type, variety, and date and location of harvest. There will be envelopes and bags on-hand at the event, but participants are encouraged to bring their own envelopes. Attendees should arrive at 1:30 p.m. and need not bring seeds to participate.

Kildare to Open in Downtown Marquette

Marquette, MI – Kildare Irish American Pub, located at 142 West Washington Street, plans to open its doors in Downtown Marquette in time for St. Patrick’s Day on March 17! The pub will feature traditional Irish fare, with menu items such as corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, Guinness beef stew, and more. Initially, the restaurant will be open Tuesday through Saturday, with the potential for expanded hours in the summer months. Van Riper Lantern Lit Snowshoe

Champion, MI – Van Riper State Park will host a 1.25 mile lantern-lit snowshoe trail hike on Saturday, March 16th from 7 pm – 9 pm. Meet at the Rustic Peshekee Cabin, and stick around to warm up by the fire and enjoy some refreshments!

Snowshoe at Hungarian Falls March 16th

NMU Wildcat Den Offers World Taste Tour

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University will host “Taste Tour of the World” lunches at the Wildcat Den in the University Center from Tuesday, March 19 through Thursday, March 21. Each day will feature cuisine from a different country—France, Germany and Spain—in celebration of World Languages Week. The meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are free for NMU students with a meal plan. General admission is $9.75 and children can eat for $5.75.

The menus follow:

French cuisine on Tuesday will include beef bourguignon with a baguette, ratatouille, chocolate eclairs and creme brulee.

German features on Wednesday will be pork schnitzel with lemon butter, spaetzle and red cabbage, pretzel bites with craft beer cheese sauce and whole grain mustard, German chocolate cake and black forest torte.

Spanish cuisine on Thursday will include chicken and rice with chorizo, potato bravas with bravas sauce and garlic aioli, tarta de santiago (Spanish almond cake) and churros.

This event is sponsored by the NMU Languages, Literatures and International Studies Department in collaboration with the Multicultural Education and Resource Center and Dining Services.

Local Marketing Women Team Up to Lead Senior Living Community

Marquette, MI – Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care has some new faces leading their community relations efforts. Jennifer Huetter and Lindsay Hemmila have joined together to serve the families and
residents of Brookridge Heights as well as work with new families to join the senior living community.

Huetter, who has worked for Brookridge Heights for 4 years as the sales and marketing director, was promoted in November 2018 to serve as the Executive Director of the organization. Huetter hired Hemmila to replace her as the sales and marketing director in February 2019.

Huetter is a long-time resident of the Marquette area and has 20 years of marketing and public relations experience. Prior to joining Brookridge Heights, Huetter was the District Manager of Public Affairs for Cleveland-Cliffs and the Assistant Director of Creative Services for WLUC-TV6. She is an active member of Marquette Breakfast Rotary.

“We’ve had some exciting and new changes happening here at Brookridge,” said Huetter, executive director of Brookridge Heights. “Lindsay brings a wide range of experience along with a great sense of enthusiasm. I’m excited to have her as part of our Brookridge family and I’m anxious to see the new approach she will bring to our sales and marketing efforts.”

Hemmila joins Brookridge Heights with over 15 years of experience in marketing, public relations and community outreach. Prior to joining Brookridge Heights, Hemmila was the Manager of Community Services for UP Home Health and Hospice in Marquette and Ishpeming and was the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for the Lake Superior Community Partnership.”

“I am so thrilled join the Brookridge Team and have the opportunity to work with Jennifer Huetter. My entire career has been spent in the marketing, communications and public relations field and I look forward to continuing to foster the professional relationships I have made over the years, while also making new ones. I look forward to serving the Brookridge community with compassion and dignity while providing exceptional care to our residents.”

MAPS Announces School of Choice Openings

Marquette, MI – Marquette Area Public Schools announces School of Choice openings for non-residents in all grades for the 1st semester of the 2019-2020 school year.

Application forms may be obtained at any MAPS school building or at the Superintendent’s office. Completed application forms will be accepted through Friday, September 6, 2019. The district will make every effort to accommodate building preference at the elementary level, but retains the right to make the final building selection for student placement. The enrollment deadline for students accepted under the School of Choice program is Friday, September 6, 2019.

Students must reside within the Marquette-Alger RESA to be eligible for School of Choice at MAPS.
