2018 UP 200 Dryland Dash – October 13-14

Negaunee, MI – On October 13th and 14th, the UPSDA in collaboration with Wisconsin Trailblazers Sled Dog Club will host the UP200 Dryland Dash. This event will be held at the Negaunee Township Hall and Recreation Complex on M35, south of the US41 intersection. The race course consists of 1-mile and 2-mile loops. Competitors can enter classes for wheeled rigs, bikejoring, and Canicross to compete for each day in their class. Trophies and prize money are awarded on the best times accumulated during the two-day event. New this year will be a one-day UP200 Dryland Dash Fun Run geared for people who want to get a taste of competing in bikejoring and Canicross events. Using the same trails, the Fun Run will take place on Saturday, October 14th.

NMU Hosts Visiting Writers

Marquette, MIOctober 8, 2018 – Poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil and author Dustin Parsons will read from their works and answer questions during a joint presentation at Northern Michigan University. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in Jamrich Hall 1318. It is hosted by the NMU Visiting Writers Program and admission is free.

Nezhukumatahil is a professor of English at the University of Mississippi. Her newest collection of poems, Oceanic, will be released in April 2019. Some of her past works include: World of WonderLucky Fish and At the Drive in Volcano. Nezhukumatahil has a master’s degree from Ohio State University and is the poetry editor of Orion magazine. Her poems have appeared in the Best American Poetry series, American Poetry Review, New England Review, Poetry, Ploughshares and Tin House.

Parsons is the author of Exploded View: Essays on Fatherhood and is an American literature professor at the University of Mississippi. Parsons has served as the non-fiction editor for The Mid-American Review. Awards for his writing include an Ohio Arts Grant and New York Fine Arts Grant in creative non-fiction and a “notable” in the 2014 Best American Essays.

Pups on Peaks Dog Hike

Ishpeming, MIOctober 8, 2018 – Community member organizes hike to benefit UPAWS Saturday, October 13th at 10am. A dog hike will begin at the RAMBA trailhead in Ishpeming, MI. This hike costs $10 with all proceeds donated to UPAWS (a bandanna for your dog is provided while supplies last).

This event is a great way to check out the trails in the West End and also help local animals in
need. The organizer is asking everyone to arrive before 10am to register and pay with cash or
check only.

There are two options for the hike to encourage all levels of hikers to participate. One option is
less than a mile and is one summit up and down. The other option is two summits and almost
two mile hike. All dogs must be on leash for hike.

Upper Great Lakes Palliative Care and Hospice Conference Set for October

Marquette, MIOctober 8, 2018 – Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice is hosting its fifth Upper Great Lakes Palliative Care and Hospice Conference entitled “…at the Heart of Every Moment.” The conference is scheduled for October 23 & 24 at the Holiday Inn in Marquette. Registration is now open for those seeking an energetic, invigorating conference where great minds come together-physicians, nurses, care providers and professionals across disciplines-to explore, learn and improve care for patients. Registration is available at the rate of $150 for those who register before October 15th.

The focus of the conference includes person/family-centered care through a collaborative approach, spirituality (not necessarily religion), and evolving changes in delivery of hospice care. Other topics presented at the conference will include cannabinoid use in palliative care, compassion fatigue, End of Life Doula, the Neuroscience of Pain and Integrative Medicine.

A special free community presentation will be provided on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at 5:15pm by The Honorable Judge Cheryl Hill. She will discuss the legal issues surrounding Conservatorships, Guardianships, DPOA, Living Wills and Probate.

A diverse, expert panel of presenters will bring this information to attendees. This conference will offer more than 20 distinguished speakers. Keynote speakers include Dr. Larry Skendzel, Hospice Director, Gundersen Health System, LaCrosse, WI; Dr. Sheetal Acharya, UPHS – Oncology-Hematology; Dr. Lisa Long, UPHS Family Medicine, Dr. Mike Grossman, UPHS-Bell Family Practice, Jon Magnuson, MDiv, Cedar Tree Institute; and Dr. Mary Tobin-Anderson- UPHS-Lakewood Clinic.
