Marquette, Mich.– Join Northern Vegans for a vegan potluck dinner at 6 PM on Monday, April 9th, in the Shiras Room on the second floor of the Peter White Public Library at 217 N. Front St in Marquette.

Please bring a vegan dish (no meat, dairy, or honey) to share, or consider a donation to our group if you are unable to bring some vegan food.

Providing Help to a Caregiver? Free Training Available, April 10

Respite Education and Support Tools (REST)

Iron Mountain, Mich.- Rest is an originally designed educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give. The ultimate goal of this training course is to assist individuals to become effective companions and respite workers by learning the three key steps of support: Prepare, Care and Connect.

REST training is now available in the Iron Mountain area brought to you by the U.P. Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP. This is a nationally recognized certification which is eligible for Nursing and Social Work CEU’s and is open to the general public. In addition, there is no charge to participants for this training and lunch and materials are included.

The REST training will be provided on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. The training will be from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (CST) with lunch included. Community Playgroups from Birth to 5 – April 11

Ishpeming, Mi.– Marquette-Alger Great Start Collaborative will host the Community Playgroups from birth to 5 program at Aspen Ridge Elementary School, Wednesday, April 11, from 10:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m.

Bring your little one to join in on the fun and to play with other children in the community! There will be activities, storytime and snacks are provided.

This is a free ongoing event (every Wednesday) until May 16.

Guest Saxophonist Performs at NMU, April 9

Marquette, Mich.– Leading concert saxophonist John Sampen will perform as part of the Northern Michigan University Music Department’s Guest Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 9, in Reynolds Recital Hall. His concert will be preceded by another saxophone performance, as student Logan Galindo will present his senior recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8. Both events are free and will be held in NMU’s Reynolds Recital Hall.

Sampen is a leading concert saxophonist and is a particularly distinguished artist in contemporary literature. He has commissioned more than 100 new works, including compositions by Alder, Babbitt, Bolcom, and Cage. Sampen has a degree from Northwestern University and was named the Distinguished Artist Professor at Bowling Green State University. He also is the past president of the North American Saxophone Alliance.

Galindo’s Senior Recital will include music from a variety of styles and time periods. He will perform musical selections by composers including Albinoni, Pascal, and Cockcroft. The recital will also include a piece originally written for a string quartet and solo oboe, transposed by Galindo to feature a saxophone quartet and solo soprano saxophone. The concert features Nancy Zimmerman on piano.
