NMU Hosts Gun Control Debate March 28th

 Marquette, Mich.- Northern Michigan University will host a gun control debate at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. The debate will include two participants: Mike Weisser, who published seven books and writes blogs on guns for the Huffington Post; and John Lott Jr., Fox News columnist and president of the newly formed Crime Prevention Research Center. The event is free for NMU students and $2 for the general public.

Weisser does not believe that the solution to America’s gun problem is to arm ourselves with more guns. He has written more than 1,000 articles, published seven books and writes blogs on guns for The Huffington Post. He’s also a lifetime NRA member and was in the gun business for 35 years.

Lott’s opinion pieces have appeared in “The New York Times,” “Wall Street Journal” and other major publications. He is the author of eight books, including “More Guns, Less Crime” and “Dumbing Down the Courts: How Politics Keeps the Smartest Judges Off the Bench.” Lott holds a doctorate in economics from UCLA. He has published more than 100 articles in academic journals and has held research and teaching positions at the University of Chicago, Yale University, Stanford, UCLA, Wharton and Rice.

NMU Political Science Professor Steven Nelson will moderate the debate.

Three Vacant Seats Filled on the Special Advisory Committee in Negaunee on Blight Resolution

Negaunee, Mich.– City Manager Nate Heffron has appointed three individuals to fill three vacant seats on the newly formed Special Advisory Committee on Blight Resolution for the City of Negaunee.

The following individuals have been appointed: Rhonda Gravedoni, Dana LaLonde, and Lori Lancaster. A press rerelease will be forthcoming on when this committee will meet, additionally these meetings will be posted on the City’s website, Facebook site, and at City Hall. All meetings are open to the public.

In addition to the newly appointed members, the committee will also consist of City Manager, Chief of Police, and City Attorney. The committee will perform the following functions:

1. Review of the International Property Maintenance Code;

2. Determine if any parameters described as violations within the International Maintenance Code apply to properties within the City of Negaunee;

3. Determine whether current ordinances pertaining to blight are effective;

4. Determine if there currently is a “blight” problem within the community of Negaunee;

5. Determine what sections of the International Property Maintenance Code should be adopted by the City of Negaunee;

6. Provide a recommendation as to what property classes would be best served at this time to apply such standards of the International Property Maintenance Code;

7. Hold no less than four (4) public hearings on the matter of blight;

8. Provide a written report with findings;

9. Present findings and recommendations to the City Council.

City Manager Nate Heffron thanks all the individuals who took the time to apply for vacant positions on this committee and looks forward to hearing from the public and professionals in the matter of blight within Negaunee. Negaunee – An Ecumenical Good Friday service, with participation by several congregations, will be held on Friday, March 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at Mitchell United Methodist Church in Negaunee.

This services will remember Jesus’ 7 last words from the cross. Although this will be one 3-hour service, you may come and go, as needed. There will be natural pauses between each word.

Marquette – An Ecumenical Good Friday worship service, with participation by several congregations on Friday, March 30 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street, Marquette.

The service will be divided into several small segments. Come for part of the service, or stay the entire time. There will be special music, scripture readings, inspirational messages, and time for personal reflection.

Those wishing to sing in the ecumenical choir should gather for rehearsal in the fellowship hall at noon. The entire service will be broadcast live on 101.9 Sunny FM.
