DNR makes plans to commemorate 115th anniversary of state’s first tree nursery, 85th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps

In 1903, a team of workers under the direction of newly appointed State Forest Warden Filibert Roth pondered the stump-ridden, sandy terrain on the north shore of Higgins Lake, south of Grayling in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.

The North Higgins Lake State Park history area includes the CCC Museum and several original buildings that were used by workers at the nursery.Once a thriving old-growth forest, the nearly barren landscape had suffered from aggressive lumbering and a series of fires in the late 19th century. The workers’ job was to replant the forest.

The Michigan Legislature had just established the Michigan Forestry Commission and given it authority to create the state’s first tree nursery and forest reserve.… Read the rest

Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration’s “Great Decisions Global Discussions” lecture series with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan will present an online screening of “Is American Global Leadership Waning?” with Amitav Acharya, UNESCO chair in Transnational Challenges and Governance and distinguished professor of international relations at the School of International Service, American University.

Marquette – The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette will offer an educational meeting on Monday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 West Baraga Avenue, Marquette.

Doug Russell, Executive Director of Room At The Inn, will speak about the role mental illness plays in homelessness. People with mental illness are at greater risk of experiencing homelessness. Homelessness, in turn, amplifies poor mental health.
