NMU Presents Dance Concert Feb. 22-24

Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan University’s dance minor presents its annual Dance Concert Thursday, Feb. 22-Saturday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m., with a 1 p.m. matinee performance Saturday, at Forest Roberts Theatre. This concert is choreographed and performed by NMU students, faculty and guest performers.

As one component of the concert, dance minor students and NMU’s Arts Chorale will use artistic expression to address topical health and social issues in their first collaboration, under the direction of Dance Minor Program Director Jill Grundstrom and Director of Choirs Erin Colwitz. The concert will also include works by the NMU Hip-Hop Dance Crew and student choreographers. The second act of the show features a performance choreographed by TaMaMa Dance Company.

Calendar – Benefits/Fundraisers – 9th Annual Chocolate Festival Fundraiser for SAIL – Feb. 24

Marquette – SAIL, Disability Network of the U.P. will host the 9th annual Chocolate Festival fundraiser on Saturday, February 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center at Northern Michigan University.

The Chocolate Festival features local restaurants, bakeries and chocolatiers who donate delicious samples of chocolate desserts or they just may create new tastings for the community to try out! It’s a sweet event and everyone is welcome! Tickets are $10 per person, 5 years of age and under are free through February 23rd at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door. Ishpeming – A Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale fundraiser will be held on Saturday, February 24 from 7 a.m. to noon in the cafeteria at Ishpeming High School.

The breakfast will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, orange juice, milk, and coffee for only $6. The bake sale will feature many homemade goodies. All proceeds will go to the Ishpeming Middle School 8th grade class for their upcoming trip to Washington D.C.… Read the rest

Trenary – The 25th Ever Trenary Outhouse Classic will be held on Saturday, February 24 beginning with registration at 11 a.m. in downtown Trenary. The race begins at 2 p.m.

“25 Years Down the Crapper” is this year’s theme. All racers must be registered by 1 p.m. Spectator admission pins are $2 in advance or $4 on race day.

Bring your fur hat for the best fur hat contest in front of TJ Ryan’s Radio Booth. A mystery judge will choose the best hat for a cash prize.

Sands – An Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show will be held on Saturday, February 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crossroads Restaurant and Lounge on M-553 in Sands.

Sleds must be at least 25 years old to be entered in the show. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The event will include a swap meet and vendors are welcome. Great Lakes Radio will be broadcasting live during the event.

There will be a loud pipes contest. Throughout the day there will be raffles, games for the kids, a blow-up contest, and many one-of-a-kind original and rare racing sleds on display. A vintage 1974 Polaris 175 snowmobile will also be raffled off.… Read the rest

Academic Freedom Addressed at NMU by Cary Nelson Thursday, February 22nd

Marquette, Michigan – Cary Nelson, former national president of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and author of No University Is an Island: Saving Academic Freedom, will speak at Northern Michigan University. His talk is titled “Academic Freedom in Times of Crisis: The Future of Collective Bargaining, Free Speech on Campus, and Prospects for Peace in the Middle East.” The event is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Reynolds Recital Hall. It includes a question-and-answer period after the lecture, followed by a reception. Light refreshments will be served.

Nelson’s appearance is made possible by a grant from the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University. It is presented by the Center for Academic and Intellectual Freedom, in cooperation with College Democrats, College Republicans and Young Americans for Liberty. It forms part of this year’s distinguished speaker series, “Reclaiming Academic Freedom and Free Speech On Campus.”

The aim of the series is to address squarely topics that inevitably generate interest on many college campuses today, with the hope of elevating the discourse by fostering viewpoint diversity and tolerance for a range of responsible opinion.… Read the rest
