Marquette – A presentation titled “Understanding Self-Injury and Self-Destructive Behaviors in Clinical Populations: Treatment Conceptualization and Considerations” will be offered on Friday, February 23 at 3 p.m. in room 1322 of Jamrich Hall at Northern Michigan University.

NMU alumna Kammie Rossetto Juzwin, clinical psychologist and certified eating disorders specialist, will present. She will address points for clinicians to consider in developing the conceptual approach to treatment as well as some practical intervention suggestions.

NMU Group Offers Free Tax Return Help

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University’s Beta Alpha Psi will offer free income tax return assistance to students and community members. The program is offered from 5-7 p.m. in the University Center Trading Lab every Tuesday and Thursday through April 12, with the exception of spring break week March 5-9.

Volunteers from NMU’s Beta Alpha Psi organization are certified through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. According to Beta Alpha Psi president Shelby Talsma, “VITA provides an opportunity for students to give back to the community while gaining practical accounting service.”

Beta Alpha Psi is a student organization that helps to aid in the professional development of students in the accounting, finance and computer information systems programs at NMU. This is the sixth year that Beta Alpha Psi has provided this service.… Read the rest

Marquette – The first-ever Peter White Public Library Adult Sip and Spell: A Spelling Bee for Cheaters will be held on Friday, February 23 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Masonic Center Ballroom on Washington Street in downtown Marquette.

This isn’t your average spelling bee–this is a CHEATER’S spelling bee! Contestants can purchase cheats to advance their game. Cheat prices range from $5 to $500 with cheats like skip a word, buy your way back in the competition, advance directly to final round (while wearing a bee suit for the duration of the event), 30 seconds with a dictionary, give word to an opponent and a probable favorite: make up your own word.

Team Sign-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the Bee starts at 7 p.m. sharp. Teams of up to 4 people (ages 21 and over only, please) may register for $100 per team.… Read the rest

DNR Reminds Anglers of Ice Shanty Removal Dates and Urges Caution

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that mandatory ice shanty removal dates are approaching. Regardless of the date, shanties must be removed as soon as the ice is unable to safely support them. The ice quickly can become unsafe for anglers to retrieve their property in warmer weather.

Ice shanties on Lake St. Clair must be removed by sunset Sunday, Feb. 25.

For counties in the southern Lower Peninsula, shanties must be removed from the ice by midnight Thursday, March 1.

The deadline for removal from waters in the northern Lower Peninsula is midnight Thursday, March 15. Counties in this area are Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Bay, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clare, Crawford, Emmet, Gladwin, Ice fishing reducedGrand Traverse, Iosco, Isabella, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montmorency, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Wexford.… Read the rest
