Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration’s “Great Decisions Global Discussions” lecture series with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan will present an online screening of “Are We Getting the Right Bang for our Bucks?: The U.S. Defense Budget” with Stephanie Young, defense budget expert, RAND Corporation.

Calendar – Families – “Share Your Story” Event at U.P. Children’s Museum – Feb. 19

Marquette – The “Share Your Story” program will be held on Monday, February 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the U.P. Children’s Museum in Marquette.

The event will focus on older relatives sharing their stories and personal histories with younger relatives, such as grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The stories will be compiled into an illustrated storybook, which the family can take home to keep as a valuable record and precious keepsake.

Professional interviewers will facilitate the process by asking the storyteller structured questions. Interviewers will also transcribe the answers, so family members can focus on listening to the storyteller and illustrating the storybook.

Marquette – Screenwriter, actor, and comedian Kevin Avery will offer a performance on Monday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Jamrich 1100 on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

Comedian and writer for HBO’s “Last Week with John Oliver,” Kevin captures the pulse of America with
his shrewd, provocative, always funny observations on modern life. He entertains his audiences with his thought-provoking take on current events and social conundrums.

Enjoy Winter #MiFreeFishingWeekend Saturday and Sunday

Everyone in Michigan is invited to fish for free Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18, for the 2018 Winter Free Fishing Weekend. A license is not required to fish those two days, but all other fishing regulations still apply.

These two days make up #MiFreeFishingWeekend – an annual effort to promote Michigan’s world-class fishing opportunities. While many individuals and families will bundle up and head out to fish for free on their own, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources points out that there are many events organized throughout the state to get you started, too. Here are a few:

  • Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department 9th Annual Ice Fishing Contest (Gogebic County)
    Feb. 17, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Join this event that features thousands of door and raffle prizes and lots of indoor kids activities.

The Marquette Regional History Center Presents: Museum After Dark: A Howling Good Time – February 17th

Marquette, Michigan – Our Museum After Dark kids’ adventure is in deep winter this year. On Sled Dog Weekend, we will go to the dogs, and their ancestors, with our after-dark adventure! Enjoy special guests, activities, games, scavenger hunt, dog themed photo booth, snacks and surprises. Designed for age six and up.

7:15 p.m.: The Magic of Dogsledding brief presentation with Jackie and Jim Winkowski of Snowy Plains Kennel. Meet a husky sled dog!
