Marquette – The Annual U.P. 200 Family Warm-up Party will be held on Friday, February 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the U.P. Children’s Museum in Marquette.

Families can play mushing games, make crafts, eat and get warm before going to watch the start of the sled dog race in downtown Marquette.

Calendar – Outdoors – U.P. 200 Sled Dog Race and Midnight Run – Feb. 16-18

Marquette/Gwinn – The U.P. 200 will begin with an opening ceremony on Friday, February 16 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Marquette. The race begins at 7 p.m.

Walt Lindala and Frida Waara will welcome representatives, sponsors and spectators to the race. Many businesses will be hosting warm-up parties. The Midnight Run will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. or about 30 minutes after the last team of the U.P. 200 leaves the chute.

Jasperlite Senior Housing Among 13 Statewide Projects Receiving Housing Tax Credits

MSHDA awards $13 million in LIHTC for development and rehabilitation of more than 800 units of affordable rental housing

LANSING, Mich. – Affordable housing stock across Michigan will soon grow with a new round of tax credits to fund major renovation and construction projects. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority is awarding 13 developments with just over $13 million in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Executive Director Earl Poleski announced today.

These projects will yield 833 units of rental housing for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.

“Overall, we estimate that this round of awards will leverage more than $160 million in private investment for Michigan,” Poleski said.

For example, The Sanctuary in Detroit is a new state-of-the-art building planned for the site of the former Detroit Police Department’s 7th Precinct on Mack Avenue. The project will feature 42 one-bedroom units of permanent supportive housing (PSH) for men and women, plus an attached but separate emergency shelter for 55 homeless adult women.… Read the rest

New Mobile App, Michigan WIC Connect, Apply, Access Benefits, Schedule Appointments and More

LANSING, Mich. – A new free mobile app recently released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is making it easier for potential and current clients to access benefits, schedule appointments and locate other program information.

Michigan WIC Connect offers existing clients the ability to view their available WIC food benefits, location of nearby grocery stores and upcoming WIC appointments on their mobile device. The app can also be used by people interested in the Michigan WIC program to help determine eligibility, schedule appointments or contact their local WIC agency to learn more about the program.

“We are very excited to offer Michigan WIC Connect to Michigan families,” said Stan Bien, Michigan WIC Director. “WIC Connect is another step forward toward accomplishing our vision of having a major positive impact on improving health outcomes for clients, being recognized as a national leader and achieving excellent customer satisfaction.”
