Marquette – The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette support groups will gather on Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 West Baraga Avenue, Marquette.

NAMI offers confidential support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

Breaking Rocks, Making Water: The Secret Formula for a Trip to Mars?

HOUGHTON, MICHIGAN – Michigan Tech researchers have been awarded a NASA grant to study ways to make water, oxygen and rocket fuel on Mars to edge a human trip to the red planet closer to reality.

The $500,000, two-and-a-half-year grant will test whether robots using powerful jets of water can mine and process gypsum on Mars to extract water and manufacture liquid oxygen and rocket fuel to ensure that enough water, oxygen and rocket fuel are waiting for the astronauts to get back to Earth.

“Why do we care about this? The reason we care is because rocket fuel is such a huge amount of the rocket,” van Susante says. “Of any rocket you send to space, 88 percent of that rocket’s mass is fuel—enough fuel just to get from here to low-Earth orbit. That means the 12 percent you have left must include the fuel to get to Mars, to the surface of Mars, back off the surface of Mars, and back Earth.… Read the rest

Marquette – Northern Michigan University is among 13 Michigan colleges and universities participating in the 15th annual Gift of Life Michigan Campus Challenge, an organ and tissue donor drive competition. Students, professors, alumni and community members.

The NMU Volunteer Center will host on-campus registration tables on Thursday, February 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Gant/Spaulding lobby. Additional registration opportunities will be offered Tuesday, February 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the LRC circulation table.

Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP will offer REST Training on Thursday, February 15 and Thursday, February 22 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. with time built in for lunch and breaks, at Spies Public Library in Menominee. Attendance both days are required in order to receive certification as a REST companion. Sign in 15 minutes prior to class time.

Rest is an educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give.
