RE: Breaking and Entering / Larceny from Motor Vehicles

Marquette, Michigan – On 2-1-18 Marquette Police arrested 19 year old Marquette resident Sigurd John Utych on warrants authorized out of the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for six counts of Larceny from a Motor Vehicle, two counts of Breaking and Entering of a Building with Intent, one count of Larceny in a Building and one count of Safe Breaking.

The arrest is the result of joint investigation by the Marquette Police Department and the Michigan State Police Newberry Post. The arrest stems from incidents that occurred in 2016 and 2017 which included the theft of numerous LED lights and several radios being stolen from City of Marquette Public Works vehicles and two breaking and entering cases involving a local Marquette business.

Sigurd Utych was unable to post bond and was lodged at the Marquette County Sheriff Department.… Read the rest

“Great Decisions Global Discussions” Lecture Series at NMU

Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan University’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration is sponsoring a “Great Decisions Global Discussions” lecture series with the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. The weekly series addressing critical foreign policy issues runs each Monday Jan. 29-March 26, with the exception of spring break.

Lectures will be streamed online and viewed from noon to 1:40 p.m. in room 111-C of NMU’s Edgar L. Harden Learning Resources Center. They are open to the public free of charge. The presenters and their topics are as follows:

Jan. 29: “Are Dictators Getting Smarter?,” William Dobson, senior supervising editor, international desk at NPR

Feb. 5: “China in the World: The Conundrums of a Socialist Market Economy,” Badrinath Rao, associate professor of sociology and Asian studies at Kettering University

Feb. 12: “Trouble Brewing: Can the U.S. and Turkey Cooperate?,” Sinan Ciddi, executive director of the Institute of Turkish Studies at Georgetown University

Marquette – Inspired Words Open Mic will be offered on Monday, February 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Marquette Arts and Culture Center Workshop #3 on the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

Authors, poets, songwriters and listeners are invited. Share some of your recent work, be inspired by other writers and get feedback from the listening audience. The presentations will not be judged. Presentations are open to all genres of writing as long as the material is suitable for all ages, unplugged and original work.

Rebounds for Rotary – Marquette Breakfast Rotary Club and Marquette Senior High School Athletics Team up to Support Youth

February 1, 2018 (Marquette, MI) – Marquette Breakfast Rotary and Marquette Senior High School Athletics announced today a charity basketball game to benefit the mission of Marquette Breakfast Rotary and the Marquette Senior High School Athletic department. Rebounds for Rotary will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 in the gymnasium of Marquette Senior High School. Local celebrities will be playing a charity basketball game against MSHS varsity players, teachers and principals. Proceeds from the event will be divided between Breakfast Rotary and the Athletic Department.

“Our mission is to continually give back to our community, with an emphasis on youth organizations and programs,” said Katie Koch, president of Marquette Breakfast Rotary. “This event enables us to truly involve our youth in raising funds not only for their school but also to help support and learn about all the good that Rotary is doing in the Marquette community.”

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host its “A Trip to Mexico” ethnic dinner on Thursday, February 15 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Chez Nous restaurant in the Jacobetti Complex on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

The event includes an appetizer buffet, sit-down dinner and desserts prepared by NMU students. The cost is $28 for NCLL members and $35 for non-members. Payment is required at the time of registration, and a cash wine bar will be available at the event.

Marquette – DocuMonday will present a screening of the 2016 documentary “Raising Bertie” on Monday, February 5 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

“Raising Bertie” is an intimate portrait of three African American boys as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina. Like many rural areas, Bertie County struggles with a dwindling economy, a declining population, and a high school graduation rate below the state average. This powerful film weaves the young men’s narratives together as they work to define their identities and grow into adulthood while navigating complex relationships, institutional racism, violence, poverty, and educational inequity.
