Marquette – The Peter White Public Library Teen Writing Contest will take place Thursday, February 1 through Thursday, March 15. The Library will host a high school writing competition with support from Dr. Allyn Roberts and the Marquette Monthly.

Students in grades 9 to 12 who reside in the Peter White Public Library service area, or have a non-resident card at PWPL, are invited to enter an original poem, flash fiction work, or nonfiction memoir. First, second, and third place cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories, to be presented at a reception on Wednesday, April 25.

Seaborg Center Coder Dojo Program Begins January 30th

Marquette, Michigan – Coder Dojo 906, a community-based programming club for young people sponsored by the Northern Michigan University Seaborg Center, is offering coding classes from 4-6 p.m. on the following Tuesdays during the winter semester: Jan. 30, Feb. 13, March 13, March 27 and April 10. The sessions will take place in 2702 West Science.

Coder Dojo 906 is a club that focuses on teaching young people ages 5-17 how to code develop websites, apps, programs and games. This series of classes is primarily aimed at kids seven years old and older. Each class will provide activities for five and six year olds, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Cold War Film Series Continues January 30th

Marquette, Michigan – The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will continue its Cold War film series with a showing of Nine Days in One Year at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. The film is being screened in conjunction with the Beaumier Center’s “Cold War in the U.P.” exhibition. A discussion with Beaumier Center Director Daniel Truckey will follow.

This 1962 Soviet film follows two nuclear scientists, Dmitry Gusev and Ilya Kulikov, through their lives as rivals in love. After an important discovery, Gusev becomes ill from radiation exposure and struggles to stay alive.
