Marquette – Matinee Movie Series will offer a screening of “Dunkirk” on Tuesday, January 23 at 12:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

When World War II allied soldiers from Belgium, England and France find themselves surrounded by the German Army on the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, they must work together to survive. This historical war drama is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour 46 minutes.

Calendar – Education – “Know the Facts. Save lives.” Human Trafficking Awareness Presentation in Escanaba – Jan. 23

Escanaba – The recently re-established Upper Peninsula Human Trafficking Task Force, together with the Department of Justice and Michigan State Police will offer a “Know the Facts. Save Lives.” Human Trafficking Presentation on Tuesday, January 23 at 7 p.m. in the Besse Theater on the Bay College Campus in Escanaba.

Featured speakers include, Leslie Hagen from the Department of Justice, SA Todd Wilton ICE/HIS, and local MSP Community Troopers, Elisabeth Alquist, Iron Mountain Police Department Victim Advocate, Cheryl O’Neil Executive Director Caring House INC, and Stephanie Krieger s7Consulting.

Calendar – Outdoors – 131st Annual Suicide Hill Ski Jumping Tournament – Jan. 23

Ishpeming – The 131st Annual Suicide Hill Ski Jumping Tournament will be held on Tuesday, January 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at Suicide Hill in Ishpeming.

There will be bonfires, concessions, merchandise and tailgating. Ski jumpers from Finland, Norway and Slovenia (and maybe Russia) plus jumpers from our own U.S. Ski Team will be there.

Admission is per person. Tournament buttons can be purchased for $10 in advance and $15 at the gate; kids 12-years-old and under are free. Buttons will be available at the following outlets:

Ishpeming: Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Chamber of Commerce, Wilderness Sports, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame, Elaine’s Place, Jasper Ridge Brewery, Jubilee Foods, Congress Pizza, Bucks Restaurant.

Marquette – Illustration historian Jaleen Grove will present “Bodycount: A Graphic Reckoning in the Illustration Morgue” on Tuesday, January 23 at 6 p.m. in Room 165 of the Art and Design Building at Northern Michigan University.

Grove will address how various concepts of “the body” are implicated in the act of illustrating, in the resulting illustrations, and in how viewers interpret them. She will also explore how to account for the picture-morgue of historical illustration that built today’s visual culture and that informs illustrators’ education today.
