Marquette – The National Alliance on Mental Illness-Alger/Marquette support groups will gather Thursday, January 18 at 7 p.m. in the Baraga Place Conference Room, 129 West Baraga Avenue, Marquette.

NAMI offers confidential support groups and educational meetings for individuals living with mental illness, and friends or families living with an individual with mental illness.

Calendar – Community – Building Love: Imagine Series Book Discussion – Jan. 18

Marquette – As part of its Building Love: Imagine series, the Peter White Public Library will host the first of five book discussions led by Fran Darling on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot on Thursday, January 18, at 7 p.m. in the Dandelion Cottage Room of the library.

Published in 2010, this book examines issues of medicine, ethics and race with the story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor, black tobacco farmer whose cells were harvested when she was being treated for cervical cancer. Skloot writes about Henrietta’s hometown of Clover, Virginia, the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins, the laboratories where work was done, and her home in East Baltimore. Although her cells aided the medical community in finding a vaccine for polio and developing treatments for AIDS, they were taken without her consent or even knowledge.

Marquette – The Marquette Regional History Center will present “Fish On!” Thursday, January 18 at 7 p.m. in Kaufman Auditorium on N. Front Street in Marquette.

This is the most entertaining program of area fishing history you’ll ever see. There will be vintage photos, great fishing stories, some which are true, on record fish, fish camps, Native and commercial fishing and fly fishing legends.

Advance Tickets are $15 for lower level seating and $20 for VIP balcony seating. Tickets at the door will be $5 higher. Get tickets at the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W Spring Street in Marquette or online at MarquetteHistory.org.

Marquette – A Free Family Literacy Night will be offered on Thursday, January 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, 123 W. Baraga Avenue in Marquette.

This will be a free family night, with a theme of “Pajamas” for preschool and early elementary age children. Free books and prizes will be given to take home, plus, there will be snacks and activities. The event is sponsored by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan and Americorps through MARESA.

Marquette – Snowfest, the inaugural kickoff to the first day of the winter semester will be held on Thursday, January 18 with free activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Academic Mall at Northern Michigan University.

The event will include the equipment demos on groomed trails on campus, a student organization fair, giveaways from area businesses, outdoor games, live entertainment, free treats, and hot cocoa.
