Calendar – Sports – Copper County Curling Club Open Houses – Jan. 3, 6

Calumet – The Copper Country Curling Club will be hosting Open Houses on Wednesday, January 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, January 6 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Curling Club behind the Calumet Colosseum in Calumet.

The public is invited to stop by and check out the Curling Club, watch some curling action and/or try a few curling shots. There is no cost. If you want to try curling, the Club suggests you bring a pair of gym shoes to wear on the ice.

The Learn To Curl program begins on Wednesday, January 10. The program is for people with no curling experience who want to learn how to play. Certified curling instructors run the program which takes place every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Calendar – Education – NCLL “Evolution of the U.P. 200 Sled Dog Races” Presentation – Registration Deadline – Jan. 3

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host an “Evolution of the U.P. 200 Sled Dog Races” presentation on Thursday, January 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in room 101B of the Superior Dome on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

Pat Torreano, founder and historian for U.P. 200, be the presenter. Discussion topics will include the U.P. 200’s history, mushers and dogs, map routes of the race, the coordination of efforts involved in the event and the behind-the-scenes activity that comprises the U.P. 200.

Marquette – Peter White Public Library Book Group will meet to discuss “Northern Borders” by Howard Frank Mosher, on Tuesday, January 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Dandelion Cottage Room of the library.

In this novel, the main character Austen, remembering his childhood, goes back to when he was 6-years old and left his widowed father to live with his grandparents in Vermont in 1948.
