Grant Helps NMU Develop Victim Specialists for Indian Country

Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan University has received a grant of $450,000 over three years from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime. The funding will support an NMU endeavor to increase Native American studies inclusion within the social work curriculum, recruitment and retention of professionals with related expertise by tribal victim service programs in rural areas, and the number of American Indian university graduates, specifically in the social work fields.

NMU’s Center for Native American Studies and Department of Social Work are collaborating on the “Serving Native Survivors Circle” project. Based on community input, they have proposed a new two-year Native American community services associate degree starting next fall that combines social work and Native American studies courses.

They have also proposed an option for social work majors to get a second minor in Native American community services at the associate or bachelor’s level, which would add that specialization to their resumés.… Read the rest

Marijuana Grower/Distributor Sentenced To Over 12 Years In Federal Prison

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN —Spencer Troy Ward, age 56, formerly of Bruce Crossing, Michigan, was sentenced to 151 months (12 years, 7 months) in prison for his involvement in a marijuana production and distribution conspiracy that Ward led in Ontonagon, Iron and Marquette Counties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge.

U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney also ordered Ward to pay the government $475,254.30, which constituted the gross proceeds of his illegal sales of marijuana. In addition, the Judge ordered the forfeiture of Ward’s 80-acre farm, which Ward used to manufacture marijuana. Ward came to the attention of a Special Agent from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) in 2014, after law enforcement officers from the Lac Vieux Desert (LVD) reservation near Watersmeet, MI reported that marijuana produced and sold by Ward was making its way onto the LVD reservation.… Read the rest

In the film, two passengers on the Starship Avalon, transporting 5,258 hibernating people to the Homestead Colony are awakened while still 90 years from their destination. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour 56 minutes.
