Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Native American Student Association will host the First Nations Food Taster on Friday, November 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the D.J. Jacobetti Complex commons on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

The First Nations Food Taster provides guests with an array of Native American foods featuring recipes from the Decolonizing Diet Project, offering traditional Native American foods. Some contemporary Native American dishes will also be available, including roast turkey, bison stew, venison stew, smoked fish, turkey stir-fry, minty wild rice salad, pumpkin cornbread and more.

Tickets will be sold at the door and can only be purchased with cash or check. They are $7 for NMU students with ID, elderly, veterans and youth ages 5 to 10. Tickets are $15 for the public. The Food Taster is a fundraiser for NASA’s annual pow wow.… Read the rest

NCLL Offers Program on Esperanto November 14th

Marquette, MI – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer a presentation on Esperanto, the worldwide language, from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Shiras Room at Peter White Public Library.

In 1887, L. L. Zamenhof, a Polish doctor, created the language for the purpose of breaking down barriers between different ethnic groups. Esperanto expert Sheila Devlin will give a presentation about the language and its use today.

‘Traces of the Trade’ Screening, Talk at NMU November 8th

Marquette, MichiganTraces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North will be screened at Northern Michigan University by Dain and Constance Perry, a married couple involved with the film. They will also facilitate a discussion on race, reconciliation and healing. The free screening begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in the Pioneer Room in the University Center.

In the documentary, filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors, who were Northerners, were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. The film follows 10 DeWolf descendants, including Dain Perry, who retrace the triangle trade and gain new perspectives. Constance Perry is descendant of slaves in North Carolina.

The couple travels extensively to do screenings of the film at Episcopal congregations and dioceses, as well as schools. During the 1970s, Dain worked for a nonprofit agency that promoted reform in the criminal justice system, particularly prison reform.… Read the rest

‘Don Quixote’ Ballet Primer, Screening Offered November 8th at Northern Michigan University

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University’s music department will host “A Brief Introduction to Don Quixote,” a lecture introduction to the plotline and music of the upcoming NMU Siril Cinema Series screening of the American Ballet Theatre’s production. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, in room 319 of the Russell Thomas Fine Arts building. It is free and pizza will be provided.

The screening of the film will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Forest Roberts Theatre. It is free for NMU students, faculty and staff with ID and youth ages 18 and under. Admission for the general public is $10.… Read the rest

Northern Center for Lifelong Learning Hosts Talk on Prehistoric Garden Beds November 16th

MARQUETTE – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a presentation on prehistoric garden beds from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in room 122 of the Jacobetti Center.

Native Americans grew historic corn in the Upper Peninsula prior to contact with the Europeans. NMU professor emeritus Marla Buckmaster will discuss evidence that verifies the presence of prehistoric gardens along the Menominee River.
