Marquette, Mich., At 7 p.m., Friday, October 20, 2017, the Marquette Redmen will host the Menominee Maroons at the William R. Hart Stadium. Prior to kickoff, the Marquette Area Public Schools cordially invites everyone; students, parents, staff and community, past and present, to join the second annual MAPS football tailgate party. The tailgate party will start at 5:30 p.m., on the MSHS practice field. This FREE event will include music, food, activities, games and more. Join us for kickoff at 7:00 p.m. (tickets $5.00) as the celebration continues in the recently renovated stadium. It’s bigger than last year so please join us and have some fun!

Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

Enjoy breakfast with Alexis and an exhibit by NMU art and design professors Taimur Cleary and Christine Lenzen on Friday, October 20 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Peter White Public Library.

At 9 a.m. learn about the history, ecology and environmental impact of the Dead River Basin during a walk along its shore with Rockman and local experts. Meet at Tourist Park.

At noon, there will be a Northern Climate Network Panel Discussion in 1318 Jamrich Hall. Rockman and NMU professors Norma Froelich, Aimee Cree-Dunn and Jill Leonard will discuss the role of art and other forms of representation in public education regarding science issues, including climate change.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl.… Read the rest

Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

Enjoy a light breakfast and a chance to visit with Rockman on on Thursday, October 19 at 8 a.m. at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center in Gries Hall while viewing the Conserving the Land exhibit on efforts to set aside land to preserve the U.P.’s natural resources.

At 5 p.m. Rockman will give a presentation on his new project based on the Great Lakes and the inspirations and processes for producing these works in the Art and Design Building’s seminar room.

At 7 p.m. an artist reception for Rockman with complimentary food and music will be held at the DeVos Art Museum.

Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

A screening of the film Life of Pi” with an introduction by Rockman, will be offered on Wednesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. in 1100 Jamrich Hall at NMU.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl. The centerpiece is a suite of five mural-sized paintings depicting separate themes that emerged during his research tour of the region. These are accompanied by several large-scale watercolors and monochromatic field drawings of plants and animals made from site-sourced organic material such as mud and leaves.… Read the rest

Menominee – “Creating Confident Caregivers” workshops will start on Monday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Perkins Restaurant in Menominee.

Creating Confident Caregivers is a program in select regions of Michigan, for family caregivers of persons with dementia and/or memory loss. Creating Confident Caregivers is a six-session workshop led by trained dementia care specialists. This university tested program provides participants with information, skills and attitudes to manage stress and increase their effectiveness as a Caregiver.
