Marquette – The Northern Michigan University hospitality and tourism management program will host a five-course themed dinner “A Nostalgic Culinary Trip Down I-75” on Thursday, November 2 in Chez Nous at the NMU Jacobetti Complex. Seating times are at 4:30, 5:15 and 6:30 p.m.

The menu includes a Michigan-themed romaine salad with warm bacon dressing and Michigan cherries, and a choice of smoked brisket with Georgia peach bourbon glaze or southern fried catfish and key lime pie with whipped cream. Non-alcoholic beverages are included.

Marquette – The Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve will celebrate their 22nd year as a successful environmental organization in Marquette County at their Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 2 at 6 p.m. at Black Rocks Brewery in Marquette.

All are welcome to attend the event and the festivities that begin with a short meeting with the Board of Directors. The Board will discuss changes to bylaws as well as highlight the year’s activities. Afterwards, the evening will progress as an open house where people are invited to talk with the group, check out their
display, and try out the forest inspired beer that Blackrocks Brewery has specially created for YDWP.

Entertainment will include a short film by Wonderquest Films that will be premiered on the brewery’s big screen during the course of the evening. The film will feature clips of the work that YDWP does as well as the places the group protects.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Northern Michigan University Gonzo Media group will screen “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul” on Thursday, November 2 at 9 p.m. in room 165 of NMU’s Art and Design Building.

In the 1974 film, cleaning lady Emmi Kurowski is lonely in her old age, since her husband died years ago and her grown children offer little companionship. She goes to a bar frequented by Arab immigrants and strikes up a friendship with Ali, a middle-aged mechanic. Their relationship soon develops into something more, and Emmi’s family and neighbors criticize their spontaneous marriage. Soon Emmi and Ali are forced to confront their own insecurities about their future.

Calendar – Education – “Cold War in the U.P.” Exhibit Opening at Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center – Nov. 2

Marquette – Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will unveil its new “Cold War in the U.P.” exhibit on Thursday, November 2 with an opening reception at 7 p.m. at the Center in Gries Hall at NMU.

From the late 1940s until the early 1990s, the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a battle for political and social influence throughout the planet. At the crux of this conflict was the ever-present danger of nuclear war, as both countries had enough armaments to destroy the Earth many times over. The Cold War exhibit will explore the mass military industrial complex that spread throughout the United States and the key role played by the Upper Peninsula in America’s defense. It also will highlight U.P. natives who made impacts during that period, including Clarence “Kelly” Johnson and Glenn Seaborg of Ishpeming.… Read the rest
