Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

Enjoy a light breakfast and a chance to visit with Rockman on on Thursday, October 19 at 8 a.m. at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center in Gries Hall while viewing the Conserving the Land exhibit on efforts to set aside land to preserve the U.P.’s natural resources.

At 5 p.m. Rockman will give a presentation on his new project based on the Great Lakes and the inspirations and processes for producing these works in the Art and Design Building’s seminar room.

At 7 p.m. an artist reception for Rockman with complimentary food and music will be held at the DeVos Art Museum.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl.… Read the rest

Marquette – A Free Family Literacy Night will be offered on Thursday, October 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum, 123 W. Baraga Avenue in Marquette.

This will be a free family night for preschool and early elementary age children. Free books and prizes will be given to take home, plus, there will be snacks and activities. The event is sponsored by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan and Americorps through MARESA.

NMU Announces New Business Venture Competition

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University students, regardless of major, and Upper Peninsula high school students are invited to participate in the 11th annual New Business Venture Competition sponsored by the NMU College of Business. Individual students or teams of up to five can compete for a $5,000 cash prize and an additional $5,000 in business support. There is a guaranteed prize of $500 for the best high school idea.

The first step is to submit an electronic “Intent to Compete” form and business proposal by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27. A committee of faculty and staff members will screen submissions and choose finalists to proceed to the second stage, which calls for a detailed business plan that abides by the guidelines and is submitted by Friday, March 2. A small stipend is available for participants to help offset the costs of developing the plan.… Read the rest
