Yale Storm and Hot Pstromi to Perform at NMU October 17th

Marquette, MI- The Northern Michigan University music department will host a concert featuring Yale Storm and Hot Pstromi at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Reynolds Recital Hall. This free concert is part of the NMU music department’s Guest Artist Series.

Bandleader Yale Storm founded the group after conducting extensive field research in Europe and the Balkans among the Jewish and Rom communities. Hot Pstromi’s sound has influences of traditional klezmer, new Jewish music, Gypsy, khasidic, world beat and Balkan music.… Read the rest

Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

Enjoy a light breakfast and a chance to visit with Rockman on on Thursday, October 19 at 8 a.m. at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center in Gries Hall while viewing the Conserving the Land exhibit on efforts to set aside land to preserve the U.P.’s natural resources.

At 5 p.m. Rockman will give a presentation on his new project based on the Great Lakes and the inspirations and processes for producing these works in the Art and Design Building’s seminar room.

At 7 p.m. an artist reception for Rockman with complimentary food and music will be held at the DeVos Art Museum.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl.… Read the rest

This will be a free family night for preschool and early elementary age children. Free books and prizes will be given to take home, plus, there will be snacks and activities. The event is sponsored by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan and Americorps through MARESA.

Phil Niemisto Statue Unveiling Tuesday October 17th

MARQUETTE, MI – The Marquette Downtown Development Authority will host the Phil Niemisto Statue unveiling on Tuesday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. in the Phil Niemisto Pocket Park, 144 W. Washington Street. Funds for the creation of the Phil Niemisto statue came from the generous donations of community members. The public is invited to attend and participate in the celebration of the unveiling of the statue, which was created by local Marquette Artist Earl Senchuk.
