Marquette – Enjoy an evening concert on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m. and afternoon workshop on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m. with Wayne Henderson and Helen White in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Wayne Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. A singer, fiddler, guitarist and tunesmith, Helen White has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe. Her compositions include works for theater and video projects as well as a Booklist honored recording of original songs for children.

For Friday’s concert there is a $5 cover charge for adults at the door. The Saturday workshop is free.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Cause for Paws Annual Gala, a benefit for the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter, will be held on Friday, October 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Masonic Building in downtown Marquette.

Cause for Paws Annual Gala is one of UPAWS biggest events of the year! Celebrate the bond between people and their pets, and support your local no-kill shelter at the same time. Enjoy an evening of entertainment with hors d’ouevres, a yummy gourmet chocolate tasting, cash bar, 50/50 drawings, tons of raffle prizes, silent auction, live auction, and live music with Iron Daisy.

NMU Hosts Artist Alexis Rockman for ‘Great Lakes Cycle’ – Events Start October 11th

Marquette, Michigan – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.” The artist is known for his paintings of future landscapes depicting the impact of climate change, species extinction and evolution influenced by genetic engineering. He collaborated with Oscar-winning director Ang Lee on concepts for the Life of Pi film. His work has also been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Camden Art Center in London and other galleries and museums around the world.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl.Read the rest
