Calendar – Art – Science on Tap to Present “A Positive Feedback Loop: Art, Science and Alexis Rockman’s Great Lakes Cycle” – Oct. 12

Marquette – American contemporary artist Alexis Rockman will visit Northern Michigan University to participate in a series of October events titled “The Great Lakes Cycle: Art + Science with Alexis Rockman.”

Science on Tap will presents “A Positive Feedback Loop: Art, Science and Alexis Rockman’s Great Lakes Cycle” on Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in downtown Marquette.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum commissioned Rockman to create The Great Lakes Cycle, an exhibition that celebrates the natural majesty and global importance of the Great Lakes while exploring how they are threatened by factors such as climate change, globalization, invasive species, mass agriculture and urban sprawl. The centerpiece is a suite of five mural-sized paintings depicting separate themes that emerged during his research tour of the region. These are accompanied by several large-scale watercolors and monochromatic field drawings of plants and animals made from site-sourced organic material such as mud and leaves.… Read the rest

Marquette – A reception to welcome Bike Magazine to Marquette County will be held on Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Inn in Marquette.

The Bike Mag team will be testing and rating the latest batch of mountain bikes right here on our awesome Marquette County trail networks for their April 2018 Bike Bible publication. The reception is a chance for the community to meet this crew of riders, photographers, videographers, writers and mechanics who will show Marquette County to its best advantage.

Negaunee – The Diabetes PATH (Personal Action Towards Health) workshop, a six week class, will meet on Thursdays beginning on October 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Negaunee Senior Center.

The workshop helps people living with daily challenges of diabetes, learn skills and tools needed to improve their health and manage their symptoms. Subjects covered include: symptoms of diabetes, stress, managing fatigue and emotional problems, exercise, healthy eating, medications, and working with health care providers.

Multiple DNR Trails Advisory Groups to Meet in Marquette Oct. 10-11

Marquette, MI – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will facilitate three public meetings over two days next month in Marquette, providing the public with opportunities to have a voice in the creation, development, operation and maintenance of motorized and nonmotorized trails in the state.

All meetings and work sessions will take place at the Staybridge Suites, 855 W. Washington St. in Marquette.

Tuesday, Oct. 10

  • 10 a.m. – The Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup and Off-Road Vehicle Advisory Workgroup will hold a joint meeting
  • 3 p.m. – The Off-Road Vehicle Advisory Workgroup will host a meeting.

Topics for the meetings will include, but are not limited to:

  • Handbook of Michigan ORV Laws/Safety Education Subcommittee.
  • Public Act 288 of 2016.
  • Carsonite installation update.
  • ORV permit sunset update.

The Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup assists the Michigan Trails Advisory Council in performing its duties and responsibilities and provides the DNR advice related to the snowmobile program, including the creation, development, operation and maintenance of the designated snowmobile trail system. … Read the rest
