Private Gift Supports NMU Tree Planting

Marquette, Michigan – The campus of Northern Michigan University will be enhanced by the planting of new trees, thanks to a major gift from an anonymous donor.

About 100 trees representing a mix of native deciduous species will be planted this fall. Most will be concentrated in the academic mall framed by the Learning Resources Center, New Science Facility, West Science Building and Jamrich Hall. Others will extend east through the pedestrian corridor to Seventh Street. Canopy-style species will be planted on both sides of Harden Drive from the Fair Avenue entrance to West Science.

The trees will have 3-inch-diameter trunks and range from 15-20 feet. Additional trees will be planted on campus in the spring.

Michigan State Waterways Commission to Meet Oct. 6 in Mackinaw City

The Michigan State Waterways Commission will hold its next work session and regular meeting Friday, Oct. 6, at the Mackinaw City Village Hall, 102 S. Huron Ave., in Mackinaw City. The work session will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the public meeting at 9:30 a.m.

The commission is an advisory group created by Public Act 451 of 1994, Part 781 to address issues concerning public boating opportunities in the state of Michigan, including acquisition, construction and maintenance of recreational harbors, channels, docking and launching facilities and administration of commercial docks in the Straits of Mackinac, and to advise on regulations and grant funding for the Great Lakes Harbors of Refuge.

Beaumier Center Screens ‘Québékosie’ Documentary

Marquette, MI – The Beaumier Center will host a showing of the documentary Québékosie as part of the CineArts Independent Film Series. This free event will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Peter White Public Library.

Québékosie takes place in Quebec, Canada. Melanie Carrier and Oliver Higgins decided to cycle the north shore of Quebec to try to better understand the relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. Their encounters include a surprising tale of an Innu man in search of his ancestors in Normandy and the heart-wrenching story of the sister of Corporal Marcel Lemay, who was killed during the 1990 Oka crisis.

Horn and Piano Concert at NMU Oct. 6

Marquette – The Northern Michigan University music department will host a free concert featuring horn player Gary Reeves and pianist Nancy Redfern at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in Reynolds Recital Hall. The concert is part of the department’s Guest Artist Series.

Illusionist Kid Ace to Perform at NMU October 6th

Marquette, MI – Northern Michigan University’s Platform Personalities will host a performance by illusionist Kid Ace as part of NMU Family Weekend festivities at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in room 1100 Jamrich Hall. This family friendly event is free to attend.

Kid Ace blends modern music and fashion with the world of illusion. According to his website, Kid Ace is ‘’mystifying audiences around the country; he is becoming one of magic’s newest stars.” He has completed multiple world tours in his career and is currently on a 70-show U.S. tour.… Read the rest
