Marquette – Dog Night will be offered on Thursday, October 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room of the Peter White Public Library.

All children are invited to come and read to a dog. Increase your reading skills and confidence by reading aloud to a friendly, calm dog. The event is free and no registration is required.

NMU Police Academy Holds Informational Meetings October 3rd and 4th

Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy will host informational meetings at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, and Wednesday, Oct. 4, in room 132 of the Jacobetti Complex. Those interested in attending the academy from May-August 2018 are encouraged to attend one of the 45-minute sessions.

The meetings will share Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and NMU requirements to attend the academy, an overview of the academy and an opportunity to ask questions.

One Book One Community Oct. Events Planned at NMU

Marquette, Mich. – One Book One Community program has planned October events related to this year’s selection, Wolf’s Mouth by John Smolens, NMU professor emeritus. The novel features a World War II Italian officer in a Prisoner of War camp in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the ruthless camp commandant and the officer’s adventures with an American woman after his escape to postwar Detroit.

The following events are free and open to the public:

Wolf’s Mouth author John Smolens will give his feature presentation and reading from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center at NMU. Books will be available for purchase and signing afterward.

Calendar – Theater – “Noises Off” at Forest Roberts Theatre – Oct. 5-7

Marquette – “Noises Off”, a British farce by Michael Frayn, will be presented Thursday, October 5 through Saturday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. each evening and with 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday at the Forest Roberts Theatre at Northern Michigan University.

“Noises Off” presents a manic cast of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called “Nothing’s On”. The play shows the chaos that ensues both on and offstage as relationships dwindle. Slamming doors and errant sardines all figure in the plot of the comedy.

An opening night party is included with a ticket purchased for opening night, Friday, September 29, and immediately follows the show in the FRT lobby. It will feature food and beverages, music, a photo booth and a meet and greet with the cast and creative team.

Marquette – As part of the Visiting Writers Series, Joy Harjo will give a public reading on Thursday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Marquette Room of the University Center at Northern Michigan University.

Harjo is a poet, author and musician from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has written eight books of poetry and as a renowned saxophonist, Harjo has played nationally and internationally both solo and with her band, The Arrow Dynamics. She is a professor of English and American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her presentation is free and open to the public. … Read the rest
