NMU AFSCME Union Ratified Contract That Takes Effect October 1st

Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan University’s AFSCME 1094 union, which represents food services staff, maintenance employees and police officers, has ratified a three-year contract. The vote passed 79 to 8.

The contract is effective Oct. 1, 2017-Sept. 30, 2020. Terms include across-the-board 2 percent wage increases for each of the three years of the contract. The agreement also includes an enrollment incentive for fiscal years 2019 and 2020 tied to specific growth in student enrollment.

‘In the Footsteps of Marco Polo’ Talk at NMU on September 27th

Marquette, Michigan – Photographer and adventurer Denis Belliveau traveled in the footsteps of Marco Polo from Italy to China and back. He wrote about his travels and produced a 2008 documentary for PBS, In the Footsteps of Marco Polo. Belliveau will be an “Explorer in Residence” at NMU Sept. 25-29 and will give a public presentation from 6:15-7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. Admission is free. A buffet of Central Asian desserts prepared by NMU chef Nathan Mileski will be available before the presentation from 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Belliveau is also making presentations in NMU history, anthropology and international studies classes at NMU, andworking with middle-school students at Gwinn Public Schools.

Seaborg Center Offers Fall College for Kids Starting September 30th

Marquette, MI – The Northern Michigan University Seaborg Center will offer fall College for Kids programs designed for students in grades K-6. They will be held on the last weekend in September and October. All classes run from 9 a.m. to noon and cost $8. To register, visit or contact the Seaborg Center at 227-2002.

Here are the programs:
Saturday, Sept. 30:

  • Grades K-1: Trees, Leaves, and Critters Inbetween! – Through interactive games and activities, students will learn to identify a variety of trees, leaves, and critters that live among them. Students will sing and dance, mold and shape leaf designs, and use their detective skills to discover the great outdoors.
  • Grades 2-3: Scooby-Doo Where’s the Clue? – Come join Scooby and the Mystery Gang as we solve the case of the stolen Scooby Snacks. Use your newly developed skills to analyze the cluprit’s fingerprints and handwriting, and uncover secret clues to put the thief in cuffs.

Marquette, MI – Seven Northern Michigan University alumni were honored during Homecoming festivities Sept. 22-23 for significant achievements in their fields, substantial contributions to society and demonstrated exceptional leadership and civic qualities. The recipients and their awards were: Paul Blemberg (’72 BS) of Alexandria, Va., and Todd Holmstrom (’90 BA) of Mohawk, Mich., Distinguished Alumni; Kevin Chandler (’00 BS, ’03 MPA) of New Haven, Mich., and Ron Fonger (’86 BS) of Flushing, Mich., Alumni Achievement; Jim Jenkin, (’81 BS, ’84 MBA) of Appleton, Wis., Alumni Service; and Joshua Ewalt (’08 BS) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Lee Francisco (’02 BS and ’05 MS) of Marquette, Outstanding Young Alumni.

Blemberg was born and raised in south Marquette and holds a psychology degree from NMU. He is in his 34th year of federal service, first with the U.S. Marine Corps and more recently with the Department of Homeland Security.… Read the rest

Calendar – Health – Diabetes Conference in Marquette – Sept. 29

Marquette – The U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network, a program partner of UPCAP, along with the Michigan American Association of Diabetes Educators, will offer a daylong diabetes conference on Friday, September 29 in Marquette.

The program offers 6 hours of continuing education for nurses, dietitians and pharmacists. Topics include psychological issues in diabetes by internationally recognized Marti Funnell, newest diabetes medication featuring Dr. Helen Berlie from Wayne State University and supporting the family in diabetes care by nationally recognized Montana Diabetes Educator, Marci Butcher. Local experts Dr. Mike Grossman, Dr. Kevin Piggott and Paula Ackerman will also be featured.
