Marquette – Get up close and personal with raptors at the Chocolay Raptor Center Open House on Sunday, September 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. at 146 Lakewood Lane in Harvey.

Tour the Chocolay Raptor Center which rescues and rehabilitates owls, falcons and hawks. Their primary mission is education. During the open house, there will be a one hour program with birds on the glove at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

Calendar – Outdoors – 12th Annual Iron Oars Regatta – Sept. 17

Negaunee – The 12th annual Iron Oars Regatta, sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club, will be held on Sunday, September 17 from 8 a.m. to noon beginning from the west end of Teal Lake in Negaunee.

Racing along the 3400 meter course toward the finish line on the east end of Teal Lake, college and community teams from the Midwest have been invited to compete in sweep rowing as well as sculling events.

2017 Parade of Nations this Saturday in Houghton and Hancock

Houghton and Hancock, Michigan – The Parade starts at 11 a.m. in downtown Hancock. It will cross the Portage Lift Bridge and march through downtown Houghton, winding up at the Dee Stadium, where a Multicultural Festival will begin at noon.

The Multicultural Festival features food and entertainment from the many nations that make up the Keweenaw’s international flavor and heritage. Some of the acts include the Kivajat Finnish folk dancers, belly dancing by 47 North, a Bollywood extravaganza performed by Michigan Technological University’s Indian Student Association, a Keweenaw Bay Indian Community performance, the Michigan Tech Dance Team, the Maple Sugar Folk and singer Jan Arnold.

Admission to the Multicultural Festival is free. Food booths will be selling fresh-made international specialties.

There will also be a crafts tent outside the Dee, and the upstairs ballroom in the stadium will feature quieter seating for diners and a series of Gappa talks by international students from Michigan Tech.… Read the rest
