U.P. Catholic Foundation Makes First Distributions

Marquette, MI – “We are extremely pleased to make the first distributions from the U.P. Catholic Foundation to benefit various programs, parishes and schools in the Diocese of Marquette,” said David Williams, president of the Foundation. Eleven distributions totaling $389,800 were made.

“Some funds previously held by the diocese were moved into the Foundation, like the Legacy of Faith and Seminarian Endowment Fund, and a few others have been newly established in the Foundation,” commented Terri Gadzinski, executive director.

The largest distribution of just over $300,000 went to Legacy of Faith, a diocesan endowment that was merged into the UPCF. The original purpose and intent of Legacy of Faith is maintained by an advisory committee that is charged with stewarding the mission and making grant recommendations. Legacy of Faith benefits Catholic Schools in the diocese, parish faith formation programs, and Catholic Social Services of the Upper Peninsula.… Read the rest

Calendar – Community – End-of-Summer Picnic at Messiah Lutheran Church – Sept. 10

Marquette – The community is invited to the annual end-of-summer picnic and barbecue on Sunday, September 10 at 11:30 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic Street in Marquette.

Activities will include a bounce house, arts and crafts, games, live music, food, ice cream and more. This is also Rally Day, the kickoff of the Sunday School year beginning at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. All are invited to both events.

Gwinn – Level Up Express Back to School Skills-n-Drills Day Camp will be offered on Sunday, September 10 at Gwinn High School.

Grades 3rd through 5th will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Grades 6th through 8th will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Grades 9th through 12th will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Separated by grade level, your child and their peers will be drilled on various subjects for an hour and half and prep for the new school year, learn new things, and maybe even make a new friend!

Gladstone – The Escanaba Fire Department will host an Open House on Sunday, September 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Besse Fire Hall, 8189 P.5 Road in Gladstone. The Besse Fire Hall is located just north of the Fernwood Cemetery, or from M-35 head south at the light from Cameron School.

‘Primer on Psychological Assessment’ Talk at NMU on September 8th

Marquette, MI, September 8, 2017 – ‘Primer on Psychological Assessment’ Talk at NMU

Kevin McDowell, a health psychologist with U.P. Health System Marquette, will present “A Primer on Psychological Assessment” at Northern Michigan University. His talk is scheduled at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in 1322 Jamrich Hall. McDowell is a 2008 NMU alumnus.

One of the most unique and valuable tools a clinical psychologist has to offer is psychological assessment. McDowell will review the major realms of assessment. These include cognitive, neuropsychological, projective personality and objective personality. Specific attention will be paid to clinical applications and actual case vignettes will be used throughout.

This event is part of the colloquium series sponsored by NMU’s Department of Psychological Science.
