Calendar – Youth – 23rd Annual Central U.P. Safe Hunting and Shooting Youth Day – Sept. 9

Negaunee – The 23rd Annual Central U.P. Safe Hunting and Shooting Youth Day will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club.

Events will include air rifle, .22 rifle, archery, shot gun, and others. All 8 and 9 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. Equipment and ammo will be provided. Archery equipment in cases will be allowed, but no personal guns will be allowed. Prizes will be awarded. Note: this event is not in lieu of a hunter’s safety course.

The event is for youth ages 8 to 16 and limited to the first 140 registrants. Registration is required by calling 475-4173. Parents who cannot attend must sign a permission slip at the clubhouse. … Read the rest

Marquette – A traditional music jam will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the at the Peter White Public Library.

Join other musicians for a community jam session celebrating traditional folk music. Acoustic musicians and vocalists are invited to bring their instruments for an informal gathering to play music together. A limited quantity of sheet music is available for use for those not familiar with the songs.

A music jam is not about performing, but a chance for people interested in traditional acoustic music share their love of music and learn a new song or instrumental technique. Listeners and singers are always welcome.

Calendar – Outdoors – Fur and Feather Swap in Trenary – Sept. 9

Trenary – Great Northern Poultry and Livestock Connection (GNPLC) will have their last fur and feather swap and flea market of the 2017 season on Saturday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Holmquist Feed Mill in Trenary.

A silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Donations for the auction will be accepted and appreciated. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions will be available, as well as a bake goods fundraiser.

GNPLC members may sell for free, and non-members pay $5 to sell. Membership is $15 per year/per family. Admission to the event is free to the public. All dogs must be on a lease. All poultry will be tested at 25 cents per bird.

Danez Smith will give a public reading as part of the Visiting Writers Series at Northern Michigan University. This free event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, in the Marquette Room of the University Center.

Smith is a black, queer, poz writer and performer from St. Paul, Minn. He is the author of two books. His first book, [insert] Boy, won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Lambda Literacy Award for Gay Poetry. His two chapbooks, Hands On Ya Knees and Black Movie, are recipients of fellowships from the Poetry Foundation and the McKnight Foundation. He is also a 2017 National Endowment for the Arts fellow.

Smith’s work has been featured in many publications and on PBS NewsHour and the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.… Read the rest
