Calendar – Holidays – 28th Annual Labor Day Festival and Parade in Ishpeming – Sept. 4

Ishpeming – The 28th Annual Labor Day Festival will be held on Monday, September 4 beginning at 11 a.m. with a parade along Euclid, Main, and Division Streets and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming.

This year’s Parade Marshall will be Carolyn Hietamaki, newly retired from MNA. The theme for this year is “Working Together, Leading the Way”. A vast array of local affiliated unions will march together to celebrate the labor movement’s achievements.

After the parade, there will be a picnic and rally from noon to 4 p.m. at the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum (Marquette Range Iron Mining Heritage Theme Park) and the Lake Bancroft Park on Lakeshore Drive and Euclid Streets. There will be music, speeches from candidates, union officials and children’s activities. In addition, Cliff Shaft volunteers will be providing free tours from noon to 2:00 p.m. for those that are interested in visiting the Museum.… Read the rest

Michigan – Goose Season Begins Friday, September 1st; New Aggregate Bag Limits

It’s time to head to Michigan’s lakes, fields and marshes to hunt geese starting tomorrow. The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that big changes to regulations this year include a dark goose and light goose aggregate bag limit.

Canada geese, white-fronted geese (or specklebellies) and brant are now part of a dark goose aggregate daily bag limit. From Sept. 1-30, the dark goose aggregate daily bag limit for Canada geese, white-fronted geese and brant is five, only one of which can be a brant. After Sept. 30, the daily limit for dark geese is five, only three of which can be Canada geese and only one of which can be a brant.

In simpler terms, hunters can harvest five dark geese per day in September, only one of which can be a brant.… Read the rest

Michigan DNR – Weekly Fishing Report for Week Starting September 1st

Upper Peninsula

Lake Gogebic: Anglers had moderate success with walleye and perch picked up sporadically by those using live bait with a slip bobber over the weed beds in 8 to 12 feet. Those trolling crawler harnesses and crank baits in deeper water caught more fish. A couple legal size pike were caught right along with many sub-legals. Some nice panfish and the odd walleye were caught on the north end with live bait. Smallmouth bass can be found along the rocky areas and off the points. Some nice rock bass 10 to 12 inches were caught along the south end.

Menominee River: Walleye, catfish, freshwater drum and smallmouth bass were caught from the Hattie Street Dam to the mouth by those trolling and shore anglers. Crank baits, plastics and live bait worked well.… Read the rest
