Michigan Tech Ranks 3rd in State in 2018 Best Colleges List

Houghton, Michigan – College Factual’s 2018 Best Colleges report ranked Michigan Tech 3rd in Michigan and in the top 20 percent of 1,383 colleges and universities evaluated nationwide.

Michigan Technological University ranked 3rd among 39 Michigan colleges and universities in College Factual’s 2018 Best Colleges list. College Factual is a website that evaluates the quality of education and cost of colleges and universities and the majors they offer.

It also ranked several majors at Michigan Tech in the top 20 percent across the country.  Among those majors, mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics ranked in the top 5 percent; chemical engineering and forestry in the top 6 percent; environmental engineering and computer engineering in the top 15 percent and electrical engineering in the top 20 percent.

First Human Cases Of West Nile Virus For 2017 Confirmed In Michigan Activity Is High Throughout The State

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services today confirmed the state’s first human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) for 2017.  Four cases of WNV have been confirmed; two residents of Montcalm County, and one each from Oakland and Macomb Counties.  Their illness onsets range from August 6-11, and all have been hospitalized with neurologic disease.

“This is an important reminder to stay vigilant and protect against mosquito bites throughout the summer and into the fall,” said Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive at the MDHHS.  “All residents should take steps to prevent bites, such as use repellent and take extra care during peak mosquito-biting hours between dusk and dawn.”

Surveillance for mosquito-borne diseases is being conducted by the MDHHS and Departments of Natural Resources (MDNR) and Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). Read the rest

Rock – The 74th annual Rock Lions Labor Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, September 2 with the parade at 11 a.m. on the main street in Rock.

The parade theme is “UP Summers”. Following the parade there will be activities for all ages including music, a mechanical bull, bounce houses, pony rides and petting zoo, kids tractor pulls, a horseshoe tournament, bingo and cowpie bingo, a flea market, pasties, burgers, brats, and beer, all at the Rock Lions Clubhouse grounds on M-35 in Rock. Free vision screening will be offered for school-age children.

Escanaba – The U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association’s 42nd Annual Labor Day Weekend Show will be held Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4 at the U.P. State Fair Grounds in Escanaba.

Show hours are:
Friday, September 1: (Preview Day) noon to 5 p.m.
Saturday, September 2: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, September 3: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, September 4: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year’s feature will be Ford, Fordson, and Ferguson equipment. Displays will include antique tractors, antique farming equipment, gas and steam engines, many demonstrations, and a daily tractor parade at 1 p.m. and the engine Crank UP will be at 2 p.m.

The festival will kick off with a free concert on Friday night with Tweed Funk at 6 p.m. and Erin Jaimes and Dylan Bishop at 8 p.m.

Saturday, a ticketed event, will feature Tyler Detloff at 1 p.m., Fast Eddie’s Blues Trust at 2:30 p.m., Felix Reyes and Paul Linden at 4 p.m., Marquise Knox at 6 p.m. and Thornetta Davis at 8 p.m.
