Negaunee – “Meet the Miners” will be held on Wednesday, August 16 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Negaunee High School.

The event is an opportunity for fans to get to know the Miners and parents and student athletes a chance to get familiar with the teams and coaches. Marquette – The Chocolay Raptor Center will release two rehabilitated American Kestrels back to the wild on Wednesday, August 16 at 3 p.m. at Gentz’s Homestead Golf Course in Beaver Grove.

American Kestrels are the smallest falcons in North America. These two birds, a male and a female, were brought to the Chocolay Raptor Center as tiny chicks, still in pin feathers. For the last week they have been demonstrating their ample flight abilities, including hunting live crickets. They are ready to go. Phoenix, the peregrine falcon, will be there to support his cousins and present a short program on falcons. All are invited and there is no charge. … Read the rest

Calumet – The Movie Magic Film Series will screen “Tangled” on Wednesday, August 16 at 7 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre, 340 6th Street in Calumet.

When the kingdom’s most-wanted bandit, Flynn Rider hides in a convenient tower, he immediately becomes a captive of Rapunzel, the spires longtime resident. Crowned with 70 feet of magical golden hair, she has been locked away for years and desperately wants freedom. The feisty teenager strikes a deal with Flynn, and together they begin a whirlwind adventure.

Admission is $1 per person with fresh popcorn and concessions for sale. Kids 13 and under have a chance to win prizes including a bike.

The Movie Magic Film Series is in collaboration with the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium, Keweenaw and is supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Minigrant program, administered by the Region 1A Copper Country Community Arts Council and Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Walmart.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Doctor is in…Optimizing Your Mental Health will be offered on Wednesday, August 16 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

U.P.H.S. Marquette psychiatrist Dr. Tyanne Dosh will give advice on how to improve your mental health in this month’s Meet the Physician series. She will also address topics such as mindfulness. Be sure to bring a sack lunch as well as any questions you may have.

Calendar – Groups – Sci-Fi on Tap to Meet to Discuss “Uglies” – Aug. 16

Marquett – Peter White Library will host a meeting of its new book club, Sci-Fi on Tap, on Wednesday, August 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Tap Room at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in downtown Marquette.

The final utopian novel of this summer, “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld, published in 2005, explores creating a utopian society by making everyone both beautiful and the same: big eyes, full lips, perfect muscle to fat ratio. Sixteen-year-old Tally Youngblood is on the cusp of undergoing the operation to become a pretty when she meets Shay. Unlike Tally, Shay doesn’t want to become a pretty, but plans on running away to live in the Smokes, a community outside this artificial utopia. Tally does not run away with Shay, but is forced to follow her by Special Circumstances who want to destroy the Smokes, where she learns that there is more to the operation than just making a person pretty.… Read the rest
