NMU’s Forest Roberts Theatre Season Announced

Marquette, MI August 07, 2017 – Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre will present a full slate of plays, dance, local music and special events during the 2017-18 season. Details will be announced closer to each event, but an overview of the schedule follows. Those with an asterisk are part of the mainstage season ticket package. Season Premiere Party, Aug. 31: A red-carpet season kickoff featuring Alpha Psi Omega, the First Nighters Club, Forest Roberts Theatre faculty and an ice cream social sponsored by Jilbert’s Dairy. NMU Theater Offers Value-Added Season Tickets

Marquette, MIAugust 7, 2017 – Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre is offering a new season ticket structure, along with a Flex Four Pass option, for its 2017-18 Mainstage productions.

Season tickets offer a same night/same seat guarantee. This year’s Mainstage season includes six shows instead of the usual four. The tickets cover admission to Noises Off, Constellations, Scrooge, the Fringe Fest, the NMU Dance Concert, and Tarzan. Also, new this year, all opening nights of Mainstage productions will feature a free post-show red carpet gala with complimentary food, beverages, music, photo booth and a meet and greet with the cast and creative team. Season tickets are $72 for the general public, $45 for students and $20 for NMU students.

Michigan Tech Honors Their Staff! – August 7, 2017

Marquette, MIAugust 7, 2017 – At its regular meeting in Houghton today, Michigan Technological University’s Board of Trustees approved emerita/emeritus rank for retiring professors Nancy Auer and Paul Buda.

Auer has been on the faculty of Michigan Tech’s Department of Biological Sciences since 1984.  She is known for her research on the restoration of Great Lakes species such as the lake sturgeon and arctic grayling.

Buda has served on the School of Technology faculty since 1993. He taught surveying and was inducted into the Academy of Teaching Excellence in 2003.

The Board also recognized five employees for 35 or more years of service to the University. They are Marty Auer (Civil & Environmental Engineering)—36 years; Paul Buda (School of Technology)—35 years; Ralph Hodek (Civil and Environmental Engineering)—47 years; Karen Jakovic (Dining Services)—35 years and Raymond Lasanen (Purchasing)—35 years.

Board Chair Terry Woychowski announced the formation of a Presidential Transition Committee to draft a plan to help the successful presidential candidate meet with appropriate individuals and groups, as well as the overall university community, and to identify key areas of interest and need.

As part of the US RD Water System Improvements project, the City and the contractor will begin work on Cliff Street on Monday, August 7th and continue throughout the week. Residents should expect disruptions to water service in the areas of Cliff Street, Lakeshore Drive, and Empire Street between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM as water mains are isolated. Traffic along Lakeshore Drive will be disrupted and the Lakeshore Drive access to Cliff Street will be closed to traffic. Please direct your questions to Ishpeming City DPW at 486-9371. DATE OF INCIDENT: 4 August 2017

TIME OUT: 1909




SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: MFD was dispatched to 525 N. Third St at 1909 HRS for the report of a structure fire. A second alarm was struck right away, and first arriving engine established a water supply and prepared for entry. The second arriving engine provided additional firefighters and Incident Command. Smoke was showing from the second level of the structure on the northwest side. A single one ¾ attack line was deployed with three firefighters making entry into the fire building. Reports that everyone had evacuated the structure could not be confirmed, and fire crew conducted a primary search, discovering the fire in the back corner apartment. The fire was located in the kitchen and was quickly extinguished with approximately 100 gallons of water and class A foam.… Read the rest

Calendar – Entertainment – Marquette County Fair – Aug. 10-13

Sands – The Marquette County Fair will open on Thursday, August 10 and run through Sunday, August 13 at the Marquette County Fairgrounds in Sands. Fair hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The fair will include events by the day and on-going entertainment as well. Throughout fair week, you can drop the children off at Nick’s Kids Show while you try to “Walk on Water”. Every evening Jim Mitchell will be hosting hypnosis shows and the Whispering Pines Mobile Zoo will be open daily from 2 p.m, to dusk with domestic and exotic animals.

Long Oak Pony Rides will be on site for the kids with the American Legion hosting bingo all day every day! Don’t forget to visit the 4-H Activities Tent any time throughout the week for crafts and games.… Read the rest
