Marquette – Build a Better World: Donate to Room at the Inn’s Warming Shelter will begin on Tuesday, August 1 during regular operating hours at the Peter White Public Library.

Help build a better world by making a donation to Room at the Inn’s Warming Center. During the month of August, bring to the circulation desk individually wrapped snack bars, cereal, coffee, city garbage bags, or gift cards to Gordon Food Service. For each donation, the library will give you a Peter White Library buck that can be used on movies, fines, copies, and other library services.

Calendar – Elder Care – REST Training – Aug. 1-2

Houghton – U.P. Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP will offer REST Training on Tuesday, August 1 and Wednesday, August 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. with time built in for lunch and breaks, in Marquette. Attendance both days are required in order to receive certification as a REST companion. Sign in 15 minutes prior to class time.

Rest is an educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give. The ultimate goal of this training course is to assist individuals to become effective companions and respite workers by learning the three key steps of support: Prepare, Care and Connect.… Read the rest

Marquette – The Marquette Regional History Center will offer a Historic Bus Tour on Tuesday, August 1 at 1 p.m. beginning at the Center on Spring Street in Marquette.

Take an entertaining, narrated journey through Marquette. The tour is commemorating World War I during the centennial of the Great War. The route takes you through the Historic District, down to the waterfront, and through the streets of Marquette. You will learn interesting historical facts about the Queen City of the North as you hear a general history narration throughout the journey from your tour guide. Through colorful characters that hop on the bus to share their stories, you will learn how the people of Marquette were affected by the Great War, and what everyday life was like here one hundred years ago.

Marquette – Teen Zone Chill at the Library will be held on Tuesday, August 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library.

Grab a snack and a friend or two, and chill out in a comfortable, air-conditioned booth at the library. Play board games, work on the community jigsaw puzzle, or browse through the teen book shelves. Lemonade and iced tea will be provided.
