Menominee River, others running high, increasing dangers

With summer officially underway, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers know swimmers, boaters, anglers and others will begin flocking in large numbers to the state’s waterways looking for fun in the sun.

However, recent prolonged rainfall in the Upper Peninsula over the past few weeks has left several rivers and creeks higher than usual for this time of year. Officers are urging extra caution when heading to these waterways.

“The inherent dangers posed by water bodies is heightened dramatically when river water levels are high,” said Lt. Pete Wright, a district law supervisor with the DNR in Marquette. “Currents are stronger, new drop-offs can be carved into sandy stream bottoms, deep holes are much deeper and there is greater likelihood of encountering floating obstructions.”

The National Weather Service office in Green Bay, Wisconsin issued a flood advisory Tuesday for the Menominee River near Kingsford and the Big Quinnesec Falls Dam in Dickinson County.… Read the rest

DNR Crystal Falls Field Office to be Remodeled

Office will continue to serve customers over the 6- to 8-week renovation project

Crystal Falls, Michigan – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will soon be updating the Crystal Falls field office in Iron County — the first time the office has been substantially renovated since the building was constructed in 1970.

“The field office will undergo a complete interior remodel,” said Tim Melko, the DNR’s western Upper Peninsula administrative area manager. “This will include new carpet, paint, furniture, improved conference rooms, and lobby redesign to improve customer service.”The lobby area shown here will be enlarged as part of the remodeling project.

During the renovation, the office will remain open to the public from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CDT weekdays.

The remodel is expected to take six to eight weeks to complete.

“We will begin the full-scale renovation process Wednesday, July 5,” Melko said. “Phone and walk-in customer service, including information and license sales, will be available at the Crystal Falls field office with no anticipated interruptions.”

Marquette – A presentation of the 2017 Michigan Notable Book, “Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America” will be held on Monday, June 26 at 7 p.m. in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Although Michigan has always been known for its contributions to 20th century manufacturing, it has only recently been recognized for its contributions to mid-century modern design. “Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America” by Amy Arnold and Brian Conway, selected in 2017 by the Michigan Department of Education and the Library of Michigan as one of twenty books celebrating Michigan, contains nearly thirty essays and interviews that show Michigan’s contribution to modern design in architecture, automobiles, furniture, and education.
