Calumet – Musical Mondays Series will present the bluegrass phenomenon Billy Strings on Monday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Calumet Theatre, 340 Sixth Street in Calumet.

Some people are just born to play music, such is the case for Strings. His dad bought him a guitar at four years old and by age five Billy started accompanying his father, Terry Barber, who was an accomplished musician. Strings got a better guitar at the age of six and started playing at pickin’ parties in the small town of Lyons. Thus, the nickname Billy Strings since he was a young boy. Between the tutelage of his banjo-playing uncle and his father, Strings was soon astounding audiences at bluegrass festivals.

Marquette – Teens & Tweens “Reading Without Walls” Challenge will run from Monday, June 12 through Saturday August 5 in the Teen Zone of the Peter White Public Library.

PWPL Teen Services challenges all students in grades 6 through 12 to Build a Better World by “Reading Without Walls.” To begin the challenge, pick up a playing card at the Teen Services desk or Youth Services boat desk. Complete the challenge and return your card to enter a prize drawing. Time spent Reading Without Walls can also help readers earn free books from our Build a Better World book fairs!

Marquette – U.P. Area Agency on Aging/UPCAP will offer REST Training on Monday, June 12 and Monday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with time built in for lunch and breaks, in Marquette. Attendance both days are required in order to receive certification as a REST companion.

Rest is an educational course that provides respite training to adults and teens who want to offer care to those in need and provide assistance to their caregivers. As a REST companion (volunteer or paid), you give the gift of your time to provide a valuable service. As a REST trained companion/respite provider you will spend one-on-one time with an adult or senior, giving only as much time as you are willing and able to give.
