United States – The 25th Annual Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive will be held on Saturday, May 14 throughout the Nation.

Letter carriers in Marquette County will collect non-perishable food donations from their customers. These donations go directly to local food pantries and others who need help such as St. Vincent de Paul, Janzen House, Salvation Army, Voices for Youth and Harbor House.

Participating in this year’s food drive is simple. Just leave non-perishable food donations in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday and your letter carrier will do the rest.

Marquette – The River Valley Bank Hope Starts Here Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 13 in Marquette. The annual challenge raises funds and awareness for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center through competitive and leisurely events geared for all ages and skill levels.

This year’s options for participants are: a half marathon; a duathlon that consists of a 5k run, 10-mile trail bike and 5k run; a 10k run; a 5k run; and a noncompetitive leisure walk. A one mile kids run has also been added this year.

The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center is a collaborative effort between UP Health System, Northern Michigan University and the Superior Health Foundation. Its mission is to empower patients and families dealing with brain tumors through advocacy, research, education and treatment.

Registration fees vary by event and will be higher on race day than in advance.… Read the rest

Marquette – Daddy D Productions will present a Rock N’ Roll Review show, a benefit for Lake Superior Hospice, on Saturday, May 13 beginning with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. at the Masonic Center in downtown Marquette.

The event will have good music, good friends, good food, and good clean humor. The show begins at 7 p.m. followed by an afterglow party at 9 p.m. There will also be a live auction, a 50/50 raffle, and a cash bar.

Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Ticket outlets include Lake Superior Hospice, the Masonic Center, and Century 21 in Marquette. Marquette – A traditional music jam will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Community Room of the at the Peter White Public Library.

Join other musicians for a community jam session celebrating traditional folk music. Acoustic musicians and vocalists are invited to bring their instruments for an informal gathering to play music together. A limited quantity of sheet music is available for use for those not familiar with the songs.

A music jam is not about performing, but a chance for people interested in traditional acoustic music share their love of music and learn a new song or instrumental technique. Listeners and singers are always welcome.

Hancock – The annual Used Book Sale and Pie Social will be held on Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on Quincy Street in Hancock.

In addition, the May Tori Market will be held at the church during this time for added shopping. There will be a pie social to enjoy over two dozen types of homemade pie.

Marquette – The Marquette County Conservation District and NMU’s Outdoor Learning area will co-host a shiitake mushroom inoculation workshop on Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Outdoor Learning Area on the campus of Northern Michigan University.
