Marquette – DocuMonday will offer a screening of the 2016 documentary “The First Monday in May” on Monday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

Take a look at the development of the fashion exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” in this film. Slip behind the scenes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most well-attended fashion exhibit of Chinese inspired Western fashion by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton.

Marquette – Inspired Words Open Mic will be offered on Monday, May 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Marquette Arts and Culture Center Workshop #3 on the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

Authors, poets, songwriters and listeners are invited. Share some of your recent work, be inspired by other writers and get feedback from the listening audience. The presentations will not be judged. Presentations are open to all genres of writing as long as the material is suitable for all ages, unplugged and original work.

Marquette – Chapter Book Club, for ages 8 to 12, will meet on Monday, May 1 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Youth Atrium of the Peter White Public Library.

Listen to a chapter a week, illustrate that chapter, and then create your own book of illustrations. This month will feature “Fantastic Mr. Fox” by Roald Dahl.

Marquette – Special study hours for all students enrolled in universities during finals week will be offered on Monday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library.

Students must present a valid school ID for entry or be able to sign into your student account. Free coffee and snacks will be available while they last. Printing will be available ($0.15 b/w, $0.75 color). Quiet study will be on the 1st floor, silent study on the 2nd floor.

Calendar – Outdoors – Family Camp Expedition on Isle Royale Registration Deadline – May 1

Marquette – Registration is open until Monday, May 1 for a summer Family Camp Expedition on Isle Royale, Lake Superior’s largest island, presented by Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center. The program runs Sunday, June 25 through Friday, June 30. Karen Bacula, Marquette Area Public Schools teacher and Isle Royale camping veteran, will guide the expedition.

Participants will camp at Fork Wilkins State Park before traveling to Isle Royale for hiking, kayaking and exploration. Evening programs will feature island history, ecology and creative activities. Travelers will kayak to nearby small islands and watch for wildlife along the shore. They will also search for wildflowers and signs of the families who once lived there.

The trip is open to children ages 10 and older. At least one parent, aunt, uncle, guardian or grandparent must accompany each child. The cost is $400 for children ages 10-13 and $475 for 14 and older.… Read the rest

Calendar – Outdoors – NCLL North Country National Scenic Trail Hike Registration Deadline – May 1

Marquette – The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail on Tuesday, May 9 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. beginning at the Marquette Welcome Center on U.S. 41 South in Marquette.

Lorana Jinkerson, president of the local NCT Hikers chapter, will lead the 3.5-mile walk to Lion’s Club Field in Marquette Township where the Iron Ore Heritage Trail has a trailhead. The new U.P. Land Conservancy Bayou Project will also be included.
