Upper Peninsula Solid Waste Forum – 4/26/17

Marquette, MIApril 25, 2017 – The MDEQ is hosting its fourth Upper Peninsula Solid Waste Forum in Marquette, Michigan. The purpose of the Forum is to share information about the latest issues involving solid waste management and recycling, specifically targeting issues of interest in the Upper Peninsula. Presentation topics include waste regulations 101, e-waste, landfill groundwater data interpretation, beneficial use, household hazardous waste, recycling, landfill construction gas air permitting, and more.

The MDEQ is interested in attracting a wide spectrum of stakeholders; including both commercial and industrial landfill operators, composters, recyclers, and end users of waste byproducts. Check out the complete agenda and register today!

Gladstone – Gladstone Lions Club Spring Social will be held on Friday, April 28 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Terrace Bluff Country Club in Gladstone.

Music will begin at 8 p.m. and will include local favorites, The Jam Band. In addition, the Lions Club will be welcoming home Karlee Metzger for her first hometown performance since appearing in season 11 of The Voice. Metzger, a graduate of Gladstone High School, now resides in Nashville where she continues to pursue her music career.

All tickets are $15 and will be available at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at all Northern Insurance locations and all M Bank locations. Those purchasing tickets in advance will be entered in a drawing for prizes at the event. There will be 50/50 raffles, bucket raffles, and more. Proceeds will benefit the Delta County Kids Fund.

Ishpeming – A used book sale will be held on Friday, April 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carnegie Public Library in Ishpeming.

Buy a $5 Ishpeming Landmark ornament and be among the first to shop the selection of paperback books for 50 cents and hardcover books for $1 on Friday. Saturday sales will feature the same prices as Friday and there is no admission charge. A bag sale will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the library.

Marquette – Marquette Empty Bowls fundraiser lunch will be held on Friday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Marquette Alternative High School gym, 1175 Erie Street in Marquette Township.

The event includes soup, salad, bread as well as live music, a silent auction, information about hunger related issues, and more. In addition to the lunch, those who attend will get to keep their ceramic soup bowl as a reminder that there are empty bowls around the world. Marquette – “The Outsiders” 50th Anniversary Celebration will be held on Friday, April 28 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.

In celebration of the S.E. Hinton’s classic teen novel’s anniversary, join the library staff for old-time ice cream floats followed by a screening of the movie adaptation of the book, which is rated PG-13. Enter a drawing to win a copy of the recently published 50th anniversary edition of “The Outsiders.”

Ishpeming – A Community Baby Shower will be held on Friday, April 28 at the North Iron Church in Ishpeming.

The event is for Marquette county mothers who are pregnant and families with children up to six months old. The baby shower will have baby furniture, diapers, food processors and more that will be given away.

Calumet – A Workers’ Memorial Day and Italian Hall Vigil will be held on Friday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. on the corner of 7th and Elm Streets in Calumet.

The unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job, and to renew the fight for safe jobs. A short ceremony will be held to commemorate the estimated 73 workers and children who died in the Italian Hall Tragedy of 1913, and to draw inspiration from the brave Copper Country workers who stood up for workers’ rights and safety in the workplace.
